Abstract

Primary hypertrophic osteoarthropathy (HOA) is a rare condition with no identifiable cause, accounting for 3%–5% of all HOA cases. It is challenging to identify incomplete primary HOA, which can be misdiagnosed as other hypertrophic periostitis diseases. At least two of the four criteria set by Borochowitz and Rimoin (1990) must be present to diagnose primary HOA. Diagnostic difficulties due to incomplete or atypical manifestations are common. We present a case of incomplete primary PHOA at Hanoi Medical University Hospital in Vietnam. A 37-year-old male presented with ankle joint pain for nearly four years. X-ray and magnetic resonance imaging showed periostitis in the tibias and fibulas, which could not exclude Camurati–Engelmann disease. Finally, gene sequencing on the Illumina MiSeq system identified a missense mutation (c.295C>T) in the solute carrier organic anion transporter family member 2A1 (SLCO2A1) gene on chromosome 3. Our case report and literature review aim to improve specialists' understanding of incomplete primary HOA and reduce the frequency of missed diagnoses.

The modulation of efflux pump functions under fluoroquinolone (FQ) exposure is of great concern as it could result in occurrence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial strains. In this study, MDR mechanism in Pseudomonas aeruginosa induced via moxifloxacin (MOX) pressure was investigated. After serial MOX [concentration of 0.5 × the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC)] exposure, the fully susceptible P. aeruginosa ATCC 9027 strain has increased its MIC not only toward MOX (1→128 mg/L) but also to other antibiotics. Furthermore, this MOX-exposed strain did not revert to antibiotic-sensitive phenotype when being cultured in antibiotic-free medium for 12 days. No mutation was observed for FQ-target (gyrA and parC) or most investigated efflux regulatory genes (mexT, mexR, and nalC) except nfxB in which a 100-bp deletion was found. This associated with the elevated expression of multidrug efflux pump operon (mexCD-oprJ) which could directly result in MDR phenotype.

Abstract  

The isomeric yield ratios for the natFe(γ,xn1p)52m,gMn reactions have been measured by the activation and the γ-ray spectroscopic methods at 50-, 60-, 70-MeV, and 2.5-GeV bremsstrahlung energies. The high purity natural iron foils in disc shape were irradiated with uncollimated bremsstrahlung beams of the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory. The induced activities in the irradiated foils were measured by the high-resolution γ-ray spectrometry with a calibrated high-purity Germanium (HPGe) detector. In order to improve the accuracy of the experimental results the necessary corrections were made in the gamma activity measurements and data analysis. The obtained isomeric yield ratios for the natFe(γ,xn1p)52m,gMn reactions at 50-, 60-, 70-MeV, and 2.5-GeV bremsstrahlung energies are 0.27 ± 0.03, 0.33 ± 0.04, 0.34 ± 0.04, and 1.25 ± 0.15, respectively. The present results at 50-, 60-MeV, and 2.5-GeV bremsstrahlung energies are the first measurements. We found that the isomeric yield ratio of the natFe(γ,xn1p)52m,gMn reaction depends on the incident bremsstrahlung energy and the mass difference between the product and the target nucleus when we compared the present results with other experimental data at different energies.

Abstract  

We measured isomeric-yield ratios for the 197Au(γ,n)196m,gAu reactions with bremsstrahlung energies of 50-, 60-, 70- MeV, and 2.5-GeV at the two different electron linac of the Pohang accelerator laboratory by using the activation method. The photons were produced when a pulsed electron beam hit a thin tungsten target. The well-known photoactivation method was used and hence the induced activities in the irradiated foils were measured with the high-resolution γ-ray spectrometric system consisting of lithium drifted high-purity Germanium detector and a multichannel analyzer. The measured isomeric-yield ratios for the 197Au(γ,n)196m,gAu reactions were (4.95 ± 0.51) × 10−4, (5.72 ± 0.72) × 10−4, (6.03 ± 0.50) × 10−4, and (9.27 ± 0.83) × 10−4 for 50-, 60-, 70-MeV, and 2.5-GeV bremsstrahlung energies, respectively. The present results measured with the bremsstrahlung energy higher than 60-MeV are the first measurement.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of edible coating on hydroponic strawberry during storage. Strawberries were coated with either 1% or 1.5% chitosan (CS) or with solution containing 1.5% chitosan and 0.5% calcium gluconate (CaGlu). After treatment, samples were stored at 10 °C, RH 90% for 10 days. The weight loss, soluble solid content, firmness, surface color, pH, and percentage of decay were evaluated each day during the experiment. It was observed that coating extended the postharvest life of hydroponic strawberry compared to control. Fungal growth occurred on control group at the 5th day and fruit treated with 1% CS at the 8th day of the storage period, whereas no visible sign was detected for other treatments. Soluble solid content and pH showed only minor change for all samples. Weight loss of coated fruit was below 6% after 10 days of storage, whereas the weight loss of control samples was around 10% at the end of measurement. Moreover, coating could maintain the firmness of strawberry compared to the control. The combination of chitosan and calcium gluconate showed the potential for prolonging the storage period of hydroponic strawberry till 10 days without decay, whereas the control sample had more than 60% of rotted fruit.
