The abundance and diversity of indigenous Trichoderma fungi were tested for correlations with the natural colonization of symbiotic arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in Cd-, Zn- and Ni-polluted soils. Infection frequency (F%) and arbusculum richness (a%) of the mycorrhiza fungi were estimated on red clover grown in a pot experiment set up with calcareous loamy chernozem soil contaminated with Cd, Ni and Zn salts (in 0, 30, 90 and 270 mg kg -1 dry soil concentration) in the field, eight years prior to the pot experiment. Correlation analyses were used to assess the effect of different heavy metal loads on the interrelations of these two types of beneficial fungi. When the test was performed for single variables, significant correlations could be found with very close (r > 0.96 at p < 0.05) results. The rate and direction (positive or negative) of correlations, however, varied with the type of heavy metals. With the combinations of some Trichoderma and mycorrhiza parameters a significant model was obtained for the infection frequency (R² = 0.9405 at p = 0.0062) and for arbusculum richness (R² = 0.997 at p = 0.0007), which suggests a significant complex influence between the symbiotic (AMF) and the free-living ( Trichoderma ) beneficial fungi. This interaction was altered by heavy metals. In the Ni treatments, the correlation data were always negative between the two groups of beneficial fungi.

Abstract  

The procedure for the fabrication of epoxy-based polymer layered silicate nanocomposites is important in respect of the nanostructure that is developed. To further our understanding of this, the influence of an organically modified clay (montmorillonite, MMT) on the curing kinetics of an epoxy resin has been studied by differential scanning calorimetry. Clay loadings of 10 and 20 mass% are used, and isothermal as well as dynamic cures have been investigated. For both cure schedules the effect of the MMT is to advance the reaction. Kinetic analysis yields values for the activation energy, but shows that the reaction cannot be described simply by the usual autocatalytic equation. The glass transition of the cured nanocomposites is lower than that for the cured neat resin, a result that is attributed to homopolymerisation taking place in addition to the epoxy–amine reaction.

Abstract

The article is approaching an interesting topic regarding ACL reconstruction using the hamstring tendons (semitendinosus and gracilis) as the graft. The initial graft fixation after ACL reconstruction is mechanical and it must assure the stability of the system until the biologic integration takes place. No fixation system is as strong as the native ACL insertion. Therefore, hibrid fixation like an improvement of simple fixation is a field worth studying. The fixation shown in this article is the Hybrid fixation consisting of direct fixation with interference screw and an extra cortical fixation over a cortical screw.

Abstract

Cognitive impairment and dementia are significant health burdens worldwide. Aging, hypertension, and diabetes are the primary risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD). There are no effective treatments for AD/ADRD to date. An emerging body of evidence indicates that cerebral vascular dysfunction and hypoperfusion precedes the development of other AD pathological phenotypes and cognitive impairment. However, vascular contribution to dementia is not currently well understood. This commentary highlights the emerging concepts and mechanisms underlying the microvascular contribution to AD/ADRD, including hypotheses targeting the anterograde and retrograde cerebral vascular pathways, as well as the cerebral capillaries and the venous system. We also briefly discuss vascular endothelial dysfunction, oxidative stress, inflammation, and cellular senescence that may contribute to impaired cerebral blood flow autoregulation, neurovascular uncoupling, and dysfunction of cerebral capillaries and the venous system.

Abstract

Background and aims

Despite its inclusion in the 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases, there is a virtual paucity of high-quality scientific evidence about compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD), especially in underrepresented and underserved populations. Therefore, we comprehensively examined CSBD across 42 countries, genders, and sexual orientations, and validated the original (CSBD-19) and short (CSBD-7) versions of the Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder Scale to provide standardized, state-of-the-art screening tools for research and clinical practice.

Method

Using data from the International Sex Survey (N = 82,243; M age = 32.39 years, SD = 12.52), we evaluated the psychometric properties of the CSBD-19 and CSBD-7 and compared CSBD across 42 countries, three genders, eight sexual orientations, and individuals with low vs. high risk of experiencing CSBD.

Results

A total of 4.8% of the participants were at high risk of experiencing CSBD. Country- and gender-based differences were observed, while no sexual-orientation-based differences were present in CSBD levels. Only 14% of individuals with CSBD have ever sought treatment for this disorder, with an additional 33% not having sought treatment because of various reasons. Both versions of the scale demonstrated excellent validity and reliability.

Discussion and conclusions

This study contributes to a better understanding of CSBD in underrepresented and underserved populations and facilitates its identification in diverse populations by providing freely accessible ICD-11-based screening tools in 26 languages. The findings may also serve as a crucial building block to stimulate research into evidence-based, culturally sensitive prevention and intervention strategies for CSBD that are currently missing from the literature.
