Abstract
An improved accurate coincidence correction formula has been deduced on the basis of Cox's theory considering the complex situations of differences in pulse shaping width as well as a relative delay existing between the two channels. The correctness has been examined by experiments.
Abstract
Zigetang Lake located in the central Tibetan Plateau was selected for the purpose of understanding of recent sedimentation rates. Based on 137Cs dating marker, the sediment rate was 0.077 cm·yr−1. The sedimentation rate was calculated to be 0.071 cm·yr−1 and 0.029 g·cm−2·yr−1 on the basis of 210Pb CIC model. 210Pb CRS model was also used for understanding of recent sedimentation change. The sediment accumulation rates for the CRS model ranged from 0.022 to 0.038 g·cm−2·yr−1 with an irregular high value of 0.12 g·cm−2·yr−1 around 1932 at Zigetang Lake core in the past eighty years.
Using an ac calorimetric method, detailed behaviour of the heat capacity in dipalmitoyl-phosphatidylcholine-cholesterol system was studied in the cholesterol concentration less than 5 mol%. It was revealed that the heat capacity near the main transition was composed of at least four anomalies, i.e., multipeak took place in the heat capacity. This fact indicates that a simple theory explaining coexistence of two phases in two component systems does not work in the multipeak region. Then, relation between the multipeak heat capacity and the change of the ripple structure with the cholesterol concentration should be taken into account, when we consider thermodynamical behaviour of the systems.

Summary
A new high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method has been developed and validated for determination of enantiomeric purity of thiazolidine-2-carboxylic acid within a short run time of less than 10 min. The method was based on pre-column derivatization of thiazolidine-2-carboxylic acid with aniline, and complete separation of enantiomers has been achieved on a Chiralcel OD-H analytical column (250 × 4.6 mm) using n-hexane-isopropanol (85:15 v/v) as mobile phase at a flow rate of 1.0 mL min−1 under UV and optical rotation (OR) detection. Detection wavelength was set at 254 nm. Then the effects of mobile phase and temperature on enantioselectivity were further evaluated. The method was validated with respect to precision, accuracy, linearity, limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantification (LOQ), and robustness. The recoveries were between 98.5 and 101.3% with percentage relative standard deviation less than 1.16%. The LOD and LOQ for the aniline derivatives of (+)-thiazolidine-2-carboxylic acid were 4.9 and 16.4 μg mL−1 and for the aniline derivatives (−)-thiazolidine-2-carboxylic acid were 5.1 and 17.2 μg mL−1, respectively.
Abstract
This work is the first evaluation of environmental gamma exposure rates by the Nuclear Medicine Department at Lin Shin Hospital (LSH) in Taichung with Thermoluminescent dosimeter (TLD-100H) during the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP) accident. After the 9.0 MW strong earthquake hit northern Japan on March 11, 2011, a TLD-100H was used to monitor environmental kerma rate at Taichung (2,500 km away from northern Japan) from Mar-08 to Apr-09, 2011 and evaluated kerma rate due to global fallout of the sever FNPP accidents. Exposure rates varied widely among positions close to the PET/CT facility. Observed kerma rates of up to 4.12 ± 0.62 mSv mo−1 indicated an explicit, heavy leakage of photon through the PET/CT facility. No significant contributions were detected at Taichung, Taiwan. Hence, the health effect cause by the “extra radiation” from FNPP accidents is negligible. As this was a rare case of environmental monitoring during a nuclear power plant accident, its findings are of considerable significance.
Abstract
The effects of some kinds of metal ions used as chemical modifications on the thermal properties of the modified polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers were studied by DTA, TG, GC and cone calorimetry. The apparent activation energies for the decomposition of the unmodified and modified PAN fibers were determined using Kissinger equation and Broido equation.
Abstract
The uptake of rare earth elements (REE) by Euglena gracilis cells has been investigated in Fudan University. The remarkable ability to transport REEs to these cell’s compartments had been observed. X-ray absorption fine structure experiments (XAFS) of cerium in Euglena gracilis were performed at Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility (BSRF) to directly determine the cerium valence state and coordination structure in situ. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) derived calculation showed that cerium was surrounded by 8 N atoms with bond length of 0.258 nm. Combining with other measurements, it may indicate that most likely REEs are mainly located in chlorophyll molecules.
Abstract
Using TAM III multi-channel calorimetry combined with direct microorganism counting (bacteria, actinomycetes and fungi) under laboratory conditions, we determined the microbial population count, resistance and activity toward cadmium (Cd(II)) and hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) toxicity in soil. The thermokinetic parameters, which can represent soil microbial activity, were calculated from power-time curves of soil microbial activity obtained by microcalorimetric measurement. Simultaneous application of the two methods showed that growth rate constant (k), peak-heat output power (P max) and the number of living microorganisms decreased with increasing concentration of Cd and Cr. The accumulation of Cr on E. coli was conducted by HPLC-ICP-MS. Cr6+ accumulation by Escherichia coli was increased steadily with increasing Cr6+ concentration. The results revealed that the change in some thermo-kinetic parameters could have good corresponding relationship with metal accumulation. Our work also suggests that microcalorimetry is a fast, simple, more sensitive, on-line and in vitro method that can be easily performed to study the toxicity of different species of heavy metals on microorganism compared to other biological methods, and can combine with other analytic methods to study the interaction mechanism between environmental toxicants and microbes.
