The article claims that one of the important means of creating a hero's speech characteristics of a literary work is the use of recurring idiomatic expressions which can be individual words, compound words as well as entire utterances. In Ilf and Petrov'stwo-part novel, the protagonist Ostap Bender's way of speaking is characterized by a number of these elements. Among them a special category can be classified containing expressions which are not phraseologisms but still have bound, abstract meanings. These expressions have transparent features not only in Ostap's speech but also in the novels' texture as a whole, and they can rightly be called winged words, since they have become widespread in literary speech not losing their recognizability as quotations from thetwo-part novel. These expressions are, for example,??????? ???????;????? ?????;???? ?? ????????,??? ?????? ?????;?? ???????? ? ??????? ???????; or???-??-???????as a form of evaluation.

Being an important means of creating comic effect, phraseologisms are widely used in Ilf and Petrov's dilogy, among others, aiming at characterizing its protagonist Ostap Bender's speech. Phraseologisms in Ostap Bender's speech can be classified into four groups: 1) phraseologisms with an amount of slight rudeness and irony, 2) phraseologisms connected to criminal vocabulary, 3) phraseologisms used as certain maxims and mani-festations of witticism and raillery, 4) key phraseologisms. The largest among these is Group 3. The specific features of phraseologisms belonging to Group 3 can be demonstrated by two examples. In both cases, phraseologisms form a chain whose links are interrelated in a certain way, which creates an interesting effect. The recurrence of the phraseologisms ????????ÿ ?????? in various contexts and the deposition of synonyms on component ????????? leads not only to a parodic reinterpretation of the phraseologism itself but also to an ironic revaluation of Ostap Bender's personality who prononunces this phraseologism for the first time. The phraseologism ???????? ?? ??????, being a neologism created by Ostap Bender (very much characteristic of his figure), is subject to emphatic dephraseologization in his speech. However, the deliberate revelation of its first meaning enhances and underlines its figurative meaning, in which the somewhat cynic confidence in one's own exclusivity, so characteristic of the protagonist, is reflected. The uses of chains of phraseologisms in the analyzed cases are highly characteristic of Ostap Bender's way of speaking.

During the analysis of the protagonist's (namely, Sharik's and Sharikov's) way of speaking in Bulgakov's story Heart of a Dog, an abrupt contrast or even a complete oppositeness of the constituents becomes apparent. In its turn, this provides the base and evidence for this ultimate oppositeness of the protagonists in the story in general. Sharikov's speech is mainly characterized by the following features: 1) absence of skills of monological speech manifested by the violation of norms of constructing sentences and by the tendency towards using short and concise sentences, 2) violation of lexical and grammatical norms, 3) abundance in colloquialisms, 4) frequency of generalized and demagogic constructions, 5) presence of officialese and ideological clichés. It is Sharikov's speech and his way of speaking that enables the reader to make conclusions about his figure in general, and determine the most important characteristic features of his inner self which are as follows: 1) low cultural level, 2) aggressiveness and growing confidence in his own right, 3) belonging to the layer of uneducated, uncivilized and often declassed people.
