Abstract

Excess molar enthalpies for two ternary mixtures of {x 1 tributylphosphate (TBP) + x 2 water + x 3 methanol/ethanol} were measured at T = 298.15 K and atmospheric pressure using a TAM Air isothermal calorimeter, by mixing methanol or ethanol with binary mixtures of (water + TBP). Excess enthalpies for initial binary mixtures of (water + TBP) were also measured under the same conditions, which showed phase separation at low molar fraction of TBP. Experimental results of the ternary mixtures were expressed with constant excess molar enthalpy contours on Roozeboon diagrams.

Abstract  

The electronic properties of the metal atoms encaged in a fullerence cage were investigated using synchrotron X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Systematic variations in photoemission of valence band of Gd@C82, Gd@C82(OH)12, and Gd@C82(OH)22 were observed in Gd 5p levels. The results suggest that the electronic properties of the inner metal atom can be efficiently modulated by surface chemistry of the fullerene cage.

Porcine circovirus type 2- (PCV2-) associated reproductive disorders and enteritis have commonly been observed on PCV2-contaminated pig farms in recent years. In order to investigate disorders of intestinal immunity in piglets infected by PCV2 during the fetal period, 9 PCV2b-infected piglets and 6 non-infected piglets at one day of age were selected and euthanised prior to suckling. Samples of mesenteric lymph nodes (MLNs) and duodena were collected to investigate factors related to intestinal immunity and to detect lymphocytic apoptosis. The results indicated that there were no significant changes in the levels of IL-2, IL-10 and transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) in the PCV2b-infected piglets but IFN-γ levels were significantly lower (P < 0.01) and IL-4 levels were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in infected piglets than in the controls. Furthermore, lymphocytic apoptosis increased in PCV2b-infected piglets and CD4+ to CD8+ ratios were lower in these piglets than in the controls. These findings suggest vertical transmission of PCV2b to fetuses, leading to an imbalance of intestinal immune function in piglets.

Summary  

A new air radon monitor is proposed based on the combination of an aluminum disk and an electric multilevel clearance system (EMCS). The positively charged, small aluminum disk has a high collection ability to radon with a collection efficiency of about 60%. The old radon progenies were eliminated by the EMCS in the air entrance of the monitor with an efficiency of about 99%. The monitor was calibrated in the national standard radon chamber in Hengyang, China. Compared to the radon double-filter equipment, the results, gained by both apparatus, coincide with each other.

Abstract  

An isotope dilution multicollector inductive coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ID-MC-ICP-MS) method for determining age of trace Pu through measuring 241Pu/241Am, 240Pu/236U ratio was established. At the same time, other two methods-α-spectrometry combined with MC-ICP-MS and liquid scintillator combined with α-spectrometry through measuring 241Pu/241Am ratio to determine the age of trace Pu were also studied. The techniques were explored for the age determination of nanogram grade Pu sample on the basis of Pu/Am, Pu/U separation. The ages of two Pu samples—one with known and the other with unknown age—were determined by the three methods. The determined ages by the three methods were all in agreement with the reference value. The established methods for determining the age of trace Pu could be adopted in the verification activities of nuclear safeguards and nuclear arms control.

Abstract  

Soil thermolumicenscence (TL), one of the methods for uranium exploration, is based on the glowing characteristics of the crystal minerals such as quartz in the nature. The paper deals with the experiments at Xiazhuang uranium ore-field, in order to show the availability of the thermoluminescence to explore granite-hosted uranium mineralization. Meanwhile, some constraints for application are discussed.

Abstract  

This research intends to investigate the patent activity on water pollution and treatment in China (1985–2007), and then compares the results with patents data about Triadic patents, South Korea, Brazil and India over the same periods, patents data were collected from Derwent World Patents Index between 1985 and May 2008. For this study, 169,312 patents were chosen and examined. Total volume of patents, technology focus, assignee sector, priority date and the comparison with other countries are analyzed. It is found that patents on water pollution and treatment filed at China have experienced a remarkable increase and the increase rate of patents filed at China change simultaneous with the percentage of domestic applications. However, the number of high quality Triadic patents with priority country as China remains small. Furthermore, in addition to individual patent assignees, both Chinese universities and enterprises also play important roles in patent activity of water pollution and treatment. In addition, the pattern of South Korea’s development can provide short-term implications for China and the regularity in Triadic patents’ development can provide some guidance to China’s long-term development. In contrast, the development pattern of Brazil and India is less influential to China’s development. Furthermore, China’s technology focuses on water pollution and treatment seem to parallel global and triadic patent trends. This research provides a comprehensive picture of China’s innovation capability in the area of water pollution and treatment. It will help China’s local governments to improve their regional S&T capability and will provide support the National Water Pollution Control and Treatment Project in China.
