The present work deals with the determination of Cr/III/ by means of the substoichiometric isotope dilution method, using PAN, 1-/2-pyridylazo/-2-naphthol as a complexing agent. Chromium forms a 12 complex with PAN. Heating to 90°C for 3 min was necessary for complete complexation. The complex was extracted into chloroform at pH 3.5 /acetate buffer/. Tens of micrograms of chromium could be determined. Effect of diverse metal ions was also studied.
Polyvinyl acetate based strippable polymer has been developed for surface decontamination. Stainless steel, mild steel, polyvinyl
chloride and rubber have been selected as candidate materials for the radioactive decontamination studies. The ease of strippability
and homogeneity of the polymer coating has been studied using infrared spectrophotometer. Decontamination of used radioactive
respirator has been carried out and the peels obtained have been subjected to leaching and incineration studies. The infrared
spectrophotometric studies also have been counducted to study the interaction between polyvinyl acetate and ions, like cesium,
strontium and cobalt.
The paper analyses the output of the publication data of an Indian laboratory in the field of physics inSCI and nonSCI covered Indian and foreign journals, processes developed and Indian patents filed during the period 1965–82 to find out the pattern of productivity. Looks at the journals wherein the laboratory scientists publish. Also points out the sub-areas of physics in which the laboratory scientists have published maximum papers and also mentions about the pattern of scientific co-authorship in the research work. Correlation coefficients between input variable (manpower and budget) with output variables (number of papers published, processes developed and Indian patents accepted) have been calculated.
The possibility of using PAN as a reagent for the substoichiometric determination of nickel and manganese has been investigated. Nickel forms a 11 red colour and manganese a 12 wine red colour complex with PAN, which are extractable into chloroform at pH 5.5 and 9.1, respectively. Tens of micrograms of Ni/II/ and Mn/II/ were determined with an accuracy 0.5% and ±0.2%, respectively. The effect of various metal ions was also studied.
A radioanalytical method based on substoichiometric principles has been developed for the extraction and determination of antimony/III/ with 1-/2-pyridylazo/-2-naphthol /PAN/. Antimony/III/ forms a red complex with PAN in the presence of I– or Br–, which is extractable into benzene from sulphuric acid media.
Conditions are established for the substoichiometric determination of iridium employing 1-/2-pyridylyzo/-2-naphthol /PAN/ as a chelating agent. Iridium forms a red coloured complex /12/ with PAN at pH 5 /acetate buffer/, on heating for 60 min in a boiling water bath. The complex was extracted with chloform. Tens of micrograms of iridium were determined with an accuracy of ±0.38%. Effects of diverse metal ions on the determination of iridium were studied and methods for suppression of interferences were developed.
