Abstract  

In an open neutron reflection setup there are some basic design parameters that have an important influence on the value of the sensitivity. The effects of variations of such parameters in the sensitivity (S) were calculated applying the Monte Carlo N-particle transport code system MCNP-4A.

Abstract  

The present paper is devoted to expand the use of neutron reflection method for the fast estimation of the removal cross section in complex materials. A quadratic dependence of the removal cross section from the neutron reflection coefficient was found. The sensitivity of the method decreases with increasing value of the neutron reflection coefficient.

Abstract  

This paper shows the influence of hardness on the beta backscattering coefficient from heat treated and plastic deformed carbon steel specimens. The observed effect cannot be explained as a change in the chemical composition of the sample (or effective atomic number). In order to explain the observed dependencies, it is necessary to take into account the structural defect and morphological changes of the different phases.
