Aelius Caesar’s Pannonia coin in light of Hadrian’s succession politics. Pannonia province’s first securely identified personification is found on one of Aelius Caesar’s coin reverses, minted in 137. A.D. Its occurrence can be explained with that he was the newly designated heir to the throne, who was sent to govern both Pannonia Inferior and Superior. Its iconography that is based on Hadrian’s Concordia exercituum coin from 119–120/121, has a clear message, which calls upon the inhabitants of the empire and especially the soldiers to swear allegiance and loyalty to the new heir. It is interesting to see that both Trajan and Hadrian were in command of a large number of troops, when they came to power, just like Aelius. Putting the designated heir in charge of a considerable military strength was a well working way to secure that the throne was passed on to whom it was intended to. Pannonia’s further importance lay in its strategic geographical position, because it was a territory that was in charge of a large army, but was also located closest to Rome.

Abstract

In [3], a universal linear algebraic model was proposed for describing homogeneous conformal geometries, such as the spherical, Euclidean, hyperbolic, Minkowski, anti-de Sitter and Galilei planes ([6]). This formalism was independent from the underlying field, providing an extension and general approach to other fields, such as finite fields. Some steps were taken even for the characteristic 2 case.

In this article, we undertake the study of the characteristic 2 case in more detail. In particular, the concept of virtual quadratic spaces is used ([4]), and a similar result is achieved for finite fields of characteristic 2 as for other fields. Some differences from the non-characteristic 2 case are also pointed out.

SmpB, a small tmRNA binding protein, is essential for trans-translation. 6His and FLAG tagged SmpB was cloned from Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv. It was expressed in Escherichia coli using the T7 promoter-polymerase system. Anti-FLAG M2 agarose was used for its purification. Mycobacterial SmpB copurifies with other proteins. We identified elongation factor EF-Tu in the purified SmpB preparations.

As locus-specific co-dominant PCR-based markers that allow semi-automated, high-throughput investigation technologies, microsatellites are ideal tools for genotype identification. Eleven of a set of 114 microsatellite markers available at the Agricultural Biotechnology Center proved to be suitable to distinguish between the parents of at least one of nine sweet pepper hybrid combinations. Markers with the highest information capacity were found to be capable of distinguishing between the parents of four different hybrid combinations and exhibited up to four different alleles in 18 haplotypes.

MOLNÁR-LÁNG AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF THE HUNGARIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES, MARTONVÁSÁR, HUNGARY Received: August 15, 2000; accepted: October 15, 2000 The translocation which involves the substitution of the short arm of the 1R rye chromosome for the short arm of the 1B wheat chromosome by means of centric fusion has exercised an enormous influence on the world’s wheat breeding. Since the first mention of this translocation in 1937 the incidence of the 1RS/1BL translocation has been reported in connection with several hundred wheat varieties. Varieties carrying the translocation possess a chromosome segment which includes the resistance genes Sr31 (stem rust, Puccinia graminis), Lr26 (leaf rust, P. recondita), Yr9 (yellow rust, P. striiformis), Pm8 (powdery mildew, Erysiphe graminis) and Gb (aphid, Schizaphis graminum). The present paper investigates the occurrence of the 1RS/1BL translocation in wheat varieties bred in Hungary in recent years. It was found that 35 (53%) of the 66 Hungarian-bred wheat varieties registered in Hungary between 1978 and 1999 carried the 1RS/1BL translocation.

The physiologically-based pruning methods elaborated by the authors were found to increase intensity in various ways, including early fruiting, improved yield and quality, and a reduction in the height of the cropping area, allowing at least 80% of the fruit to be picked from the ground. Compared with the Lespinasse control, crowns with a valve-like central leader on a sectorial spindle gave a surplus yield of 8.5 t/ha/year over the average of 3 years, including an increase of 2.3 t/ha/year in the yield of extra quality and grade I fruit.

The objective of this study was to determine whether creatine supplementation (CrS) could improve mechanical power output, and swimming performance in highly trained junior competitive fin swimmers. Sixteen male fin swimmers (age:15.9±1.6 years) were randomly and evenly assigned to either a creatine (CR, 4×5 g/day creatine monohydrate for 5 days) or placebo group (P, same dose of a dextrose-ascorbic acid placebo) in a double-blind research. Before and after CrS the average power output was determined by a Bosco-test and the swimming time was measured in two maximal 100 m fin swims. After five days of CrS the average power of one minute continuous rebound jumps increased by 20.2%. The lactate concentration was significantly less after 5 minutes restitution at the second measurement in both groups. The swimming time was significantly reduced in both first (pre: 50.69±1.41 s; post: 48.86±1.34 s) and second (pre: 50.39±1.38 s; post: 48.53±1.35 s) sessions of swimming in CR group, but remained almost unchanged in the P group.The results of this study indicate that five day Cr supplementation enhances the dynamic strength and may increase anaerobic metabolism in the lower extremity muscles, and improves performance in consecutive maximal swims in highly trained adolescent fin swimmers.

The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the Jerusalem artichoke powder produced by a simple drying method is suitable for replacing inulin in dairy products and in fat replacer mixtures. Rheological properties of milk drinks were tested by rotational method measuring the flow curve and fitting the Herschel-Bulkley model. The Jerusalem artichoke powder showed similar rheological behaviour as the commercially available inulin and proved to be a more effective thickener in milk drinks as indicated by the higher consistency values at the same concentration. Panelists found milk drinks prepared with Jerusalem artichoke powder to have similar sensorial quality as prepared with inulin. Fat replacer mixtures were tested by oscillatory tests using amplitude sweep method. The samples containing Jerusalem artichoke powder had lower complex viscosity and initial G’ and G” values indicating weaker gel forming properties compared to inulin. However, lower slope of G’ and G” indicated their better spreadability. The organoleptic texture properties of fat replacer prepared with Jerusalem artichoke powder proved to be slightly better than that of the inulin containing mixture. Based on our results, the Jerusalem artichoke powder seems to be suitable to replace inulin as a natural additive in certain food products.
