Two characteristics define a hematopoietic stem cell: the ability to differentiate into all hematopoietic lineages, and the ability to maintain hematopoiesis over a life span by a self-renewal process. The mechanisms that regulate the fate of blood-forming cells in vivo, however, are poorly understood. Despite the ability to culture hematopoietic progenitor cells (committed to particular lineages), in vitro culture of self-renewing multipotent stem cells has not yet been achieved. What is clear that both intrinsic and extrinsic signals regulate hematopoietic stem cell fate and some of these signals have now been identified, which will be highlighted in this review.

Greater celandine ( Chelidonium majus L.) is used internally as a herbal remedy besides external applications. It was supposed that the elements besides organic compounds in greater celandine also have favourable effect as adjuvants, therefore, the aim of the study was to evaluate the bioavailability of the elements. The element transfer through the gastrointestinal system was measured by in vitro model from the pressed extract into buffer solutions with different pH (stomach pH=1.1, intestine pH=2.8, plasma pH=7.5). It was stated that the elements (Al, B, Ba, Ca, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, S, Zn) were able to be absorbed through the stomach-bowel system, since they passed through the membrane. The transfer of the elements from the latex into the different buffer solutions greatly depends on the element and the pH of applied buffer solution. The transfer of the elements from the latex ranged between 0.9% (Ca into buffer solution pH=7.5) and 59.3% (B into buffer solution pH=2.8). The transfer of the highest amount of elements was observed in the case of buffer solution pH=2.8, and less transferable elements were Ca with 33.64% and Mg with 33.89% of the initial value. On the basis of results, it can be stated that the elements are able to transfer through the gastrointestinal system and may have adjuvant effects.

Reaction patterns of the 7th Human Leukocyte Differentiation Antigen Workshop blind panel adhesion molecules were studied on CD3/CD4, CD3/CD8, CD3/TCRγδ double positive T cells from peripheral blood of patients with chronic graft versus host disease (n=8) and healthy controls (n=4). Reactivity of 14 adhesion antibodies was tested by threecolour immunophenotyping. The mean proportion of CD3+ T cells (69±19%), CD3/CD8++ (31±13%) and CD3/TCRγδ++ (4±2%) T sub-populations of patients were comparable with the healthy controls. However, the mean percentage of CD3/CD4++ T cell subset in patients (14±12%) proved to be significantly decreased in comparison with the normal control value (34±16%) presumably due to secondary immunodeficiency. The workshop antibodies proved to be reactive with three T cell subsets expressing the examined antigens. Based on the results of the adhesion molecule workshop new CD categories have been introduced: CD156b as a transmembrane protein, CD167a as an epithelial tyrosin kinase receptor, CD168 as a receptor for hyaluronan mediated motility (RHAMM) and CD171 as a co-stimulatory adhesion molecule. There were significant differences in the expression of the CD167a and CD156b antigens on the CD3/CD4++ subset between the samples of patients compared with the controls characterizing the CD4+ T lymphocyte subpopulation in chronic graft versus host disease.

The authors give account of 7 new species, viz. Proctolaelaps striatus (Westerboer, 1963), Hypoaspis kargi Costa, 1968, Hypoaspis fishtowni Ruf and Köhler, 1993, Neoseiulus zwölferi (Dosse, 1957), Euseius stipulatus (Athias-Henriot, 1960), Neoseiulus subtilisetosus (Beglyarov, 1962), Neoseiulus pepperi (Specht, 1968) belonging to the order Mesostigmata, which have not been recorded so far in the Hungarian fauna.
