Abstract  

The solubilities of NpO2(s) in the KURT (KAERI Underground Research Tunnel) granitic groundwater with low ionic strength were measured experimentally and calculated by a geochemical code. Then these results were compared with each other as well as with foreign results. The concentrations of neptunium were measured as 6·10−8−2·10−8 mol/L at a pH = 9.5–11.1 and Eh = −0.2 V, and less than 5·10−9 mol/L at a pH = 11.8–13.0 and Eh = −0.3–0.44 V. The dominant aqueous species were presumed as Np(OH)x(CO3)y 4−x−2y complexes and Np(OH)4(aq) at pH = 9.5–13 under the Eh<−0.2 V reducing condition.

Abstract  

Magnesium isotope enrichment was investigated by chemical ion exchange with a synthesized 2-aminomethyl-15-crown-5 bonded Merrifield peptide resin using elution chromatography. The capacity of the novel crown ion exchanger was found to be 2.25 meq/g dry resin. The heavier isotopes of magnesium were enriched in the solution phase, while the lighter isotopes were enriched in the resin phase. The separation factor was determined according to the method of GLUECKAUF from the elution curve and isotopic assays. The separation factors of 24Mg2+25Mg2+, 24Mg2+26Mg2+, and 25Mg2+26Mg2+ isotope pair fractionations were 1.00095, 1.00857, and 1.00014, respectively.

Abstract  

No-carrier-added48V at 37 Mbq (mCi) levels was produced at the JRC-Ispra cyclotron by (, n) reactions on a scandium target and used to label environmental and physiological levels of vanadium for metallobiochemical investigations. The radiochemical separation of48V from Sc is very simple and rapid and involves a single chromatographic step after fast dissolution of the bombarded target. The yield of the separation and the radioisotopic purity of the separated48V were nearly 100% A summary of the main results concerning different metabolic investigations on rats including absorption, retention, transfer of48V from mothers to newborns, binding with enzymes as well as uptake by cell culture system is reported.

Abstract

No previous studies have evaluated the potential combined effects of acute exercise and acute hypoxia exposure on memory function, which was the purpose of this study. Twenty-five participants (Mage = 21.2 years) completed two laboratory visits in a counterbalanced order, involving 1) acute exercise (a 20-min bout of moderate-intensity exercise) and then 30 min of exposure to hypoxia (FIO2 = 0.12), and 2) exposure to hypoxia alone (FIO2 = 0.12) for 30 min. Following this, participants completed a cued-recall and memory interference task (AB/AC paradigm), assessing cued-recall memory (recall 1 and recall 2) and memory interference (proactive and retroactive interference). For cued-recall memory, we observed a significant main effect for condition, with Exercise + Hypoxia condition having significantly greater cued-recall performance than Hypoxia alone. Memory interference did not differ as a function of the experimental condition. This experiment demonstrates that engaging in an acute bout of exercise prior to acute hypoxia exposure had an additive effect in enhancing cued-recall memory performance.

Abstract  

The enthalpies of solution in water of RE(His)(NO3)3 H2O (RE=La—Nd, Sm—Lu, Y) were measured calorimetrically at 298.15 K, and the standard enthalpies of formation of RE(His)aq 3+ (RE=La—Nd, Sm—Lu, Y) were calculated. The plot of the enthalpies of solution vs. the atomic numbers of the elements in the lanthanide series exhibits the tetrad effect.

Abstract  

In terms of pre-safety assessment of a potential site for high-level radioactive wastes disposal in China, the geochemical behavior of key radionuclides which tend to be released from the repository must be thoroughly investigated. 99Tc is a long-lived fission product with appreciable productivity in nuclear fuel, and Tc (+7) has unlimited solubility in near-field geochemical environments. In this study, the effects of ionic strength and humic acid on 99TcO4 sorption and diffusion in Beishan granite were investigated with through-diffusion and batch sorption experiments. Results indicated that the effective diffusion coefficients (D e) of 99TcO4 in Beishan granite varied from 1.07 × 10−12 to 1.28 × 10−12 m2/s without change with ionic strength, while the distribution coefficients (K d) negatively correlated with ionic strength of the rock/water system. This study also indicates that there is no evident influence of humic acid concentration on the diffusion behavior of 99TcO4 in Beishan granite, due to the limited interaction between humic acid and 99TcO4 .

Summary  

Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) is the most sensitive, safe and precise analytical method for quantifying long-lived isotope in biomedical research with animals as well as human beings. In Korea, AMS Laboratory has been operating successfully for years measuring especially archeological samples for 14C dating. In this year, a biological sample pretreatment facility was setup and we have also started to work on biomedical applications. As a preliminary study, we have measured the natural background levels of 14C in tissues and blood of humans and rats. The results were agreed with the other reported levels and gave stable and reproducible results within 1-2%.
