Abstract
For a realistic dose estimation, we derived the concentration factors (CF) of plutonium and americium for the field measurements of marine products and ambient coastal sea water. The distribution of the concentration ratios (CR) between the concentration in marine products and that in ambient sea water shows a lognormal distribution. The concentration factors of plutonium and americium which are derived as the geometric mean of CR values, are 231 and 67 for whitebait, 12 and 37 for flatfish, 350 and 220 for brown algea, 140 and 670 for shell fish, 27 and 130 for cephalopods, and 250 and 550 for crustaceans, respectively.
Abstract
Tritium concentrations in rain collected at Fukuoka, Japan from 1982 have been measured. From May 1996 tritium concentrations and chemical species have been analyzed for each rain to examine their relationship. Recent rain was concluded not to be affected by tritium from atmospheric nuclear tests. Tritium concentrations showed a seasonal pattern, high during winter and spring and low during summer and fall and had positive correlations with non-sea-salt SO4 −2, indicating a long distance transport of acidic materials as tritium from continental China.
Abstract
An accurate and reliable method has been developed and routinely carried out for the sequential determination of239,240Pu and241Am in environmental samples. After suitable pretreatment.239,240Pu and241Am are separated from other elements by means of the anion exchange resin method. Americium-241 is purified by coprecipitation with calcium oxalate and then ion exchanged in mixed media of the mineral acid-methanol. In the analysis,242Pu (or236Pu) and244Cm are used as chemical yield monitors. The recoveries of the yield monitors in the analyses of some kinds of environmental samples were 7080% for plutonium and 7686% for curium. The concentration of239,240Pu in the coastal sea water were 7.022 Bq/l and that of241Am was 1.26.3 Bq/l. The mean concentrations of239,240Pu in the edible parts of the marine products ranged from 0.22 to 7.4 mBq/kg · fresh and those of241Am ranged from 0.11 to 2.6 mBq/kg · fresh.
Abstract
We have analyzed 16 elements and the radioactivity of 210Pb in a wood disk, across the annual rings to find out a promising tool for dendrochronology (chronology of wood) both for a Japanese wood, Cryptomeria japonica, and for an Indonesian rain forest wood, Alstonia, which does not form annual rings because of the relatively constant climate of the rain forest. As a result, only Mg concentration showed similar, smooth decreasing tendency in both wood species. The smooth change of the Mg concentration across the annual rings along with the growth suggested the possibility of the Mg concentration determination as a promising dendrochronological tool.
Abstract
A new picosecond pulse radiolysis Twin LINAC System has been constructed recently at Nuclear Engineering Research Laboratory at the University of Tokyo. The time resolution of the system is 20 ps and the system has a versatile capability for pulse radiolysis study. The outline of the facility is introduced. Some research carried out using the facility is presented. The examples are radiolysis of CCl4 and n-C21H44.
Abstract
Positron annihilation lifetime measurement and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry were applied to the study of temperature dependencies of free volume parameters and hydrogen bonds in segmented polyurethane, specially fabricated as a shape memory polymer. The variation of free volumes in amorphous region were correlated to that of hydrogen bonding and the shape memory mechanism of polyurethane is elucidated from a microscopic point of view. The relationship between free volume contents and the formation of hydrogen bonds significantly suggests that the shape memory occurs due to the configurational recovery of the microscopic regulation around urethane bundles of hard segment and consequent restoration of soft-segment in polyurethane.
Abstract
For the assessment of a public impact caused by radionuclides released from nuclear facilities, a dynamic compartment model was developed for prediction of behavior of radioiodine in air, paddy field and rice plant system. The transfer coefficients among compartments were determined by some experimental data and assumptions for each chemical form of iodine. A verification of the model was carried out by some case studies.
Abstract
The polymerization process of bisphenol-A dicyanate (BADCy) has been studied using a positron-annihilation lifetime technique (PAL). The polymerization was conducted at 150°C, and the process was followed by PAL. Seven kinds of samples with different curing times were also formed at 150°C, and the relation between the period of the curing time and the degree of polymerization was studied. It has been shown that theo-Ps lifetime increases in samples with a higher polymerization than 85%, which is consistent with measurements of the specific volume of BADCy.
Abstract
We carried out instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) as well as k 0-based prompt gamma-ray analysis (k 0-PGA) to measure the amount of the elements in onions and studied whether the onions collected from different sites can be categorized based on the elemental concentration profile. Six elements (Na, Mg, Cl, K, Ca, Mn) and 3 elements (B, S, Cl) were measured by INAA and PGA in the onions grown in two districts, Hokkaido and Saga, in Japan, respectively. After principal component analysis, it was found that Cl was an important element to feature the producing districts of onions.
