This preliminary study describes the concentration of radionuclides 238U, 232Th, 40K, and 226Ra in Afin-Elbistan lignite samples which are primarily used for power generation in the Afin-Elbistan Coal-Fired Power Plant. The results show that the concentration of 238U is higher in the Afin-Elbistan lignite compared to various world coals whereas the opposite is observed with 232Th and 40K.
The Eskiehir-Beylikahir district has the largest and richest thorium and rare earth elements deposits in Turkey. The uranium and thorium concentrations of samples taken from four different parts of this area have been determined by the delayed neutron counting technique. The results are compared with those of previous analyses by other techniques and found to be in good agreement.
This study has been conducted to determine whether mean values of peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak), anaerobic test parameters and knee isokinetic test measurements are different among guanine nucleotide-binding protein, beta-3 (GNB3) genotype groups in a group of basketball players.
Antioxidant and free radical scavenging activities of the extracts of sumac (Rhus coriaria) fruits and cassia (Cinnamomum cassia) cortex were studied. Plant samples were extracted with methanol:water (80:20) and an aliquot of each extract was fractionated using n-hexane and ethyl acetate. Antioxidant activities of n-hexane, ethyl acetate and water fractions were measured using Fe+2 induced linoleic acid-TBA-peroxidation reaction and the Rancimat methods. Free radical scavenging activities of the fractions were determined on 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH). Results were compared with those for butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). The ethyl acetate fraction of plant materials exhibited a marked antiradical activity on DPPH.
The city of Kocaeli is in the western part of Anatolia in Turkey and has a population of approximately 1.000.000. There is no information about radioactivity in the Kocaeli soils samples so far. For this reason, the concentrations of the natural radionuclides in soil samples from 27 different sampling stations in Kocaeli Basin and its surroundings have been determined. The results have been compared with other radioactivity measurements in different country"s soils. The typical concentrations of 137Cs, 238U, 40K, 226Ra, 232Th found in surface soil samples ranged from 2±0.6 to 25±6 Bq/kg, from 11±4 to 49±10 Bq/kg, from 161±30 to 964±127 Bq/kg, from 10±4 to 58±11 Bq/kg, and from 11±3 to 65±13 Bq/kg, respectively.
