The actinospore consumption of copepods (Cyclopsspp.)was demonstrated by laboratory observations. It was observed that in experimental dishes the number of actinospores floating in the water decreased, or such actinospores were completely eliminated, in the presence of copepods. The ingestion of actinospores by copepods and their further fate were monitored by fluorescent staining and by conventional histological techniques. The actinospores were observed to have got caught on the filters of Cyclopsspp. Two and a half hours after the copepods had been placed into water containing actinospores, their digestive tract was found to contain spores that had extruded their filaments from the polar capsules. After copepods having ingested the actinospores of the species Myxobolus pseudodisparhad been fed to roaches, no muscle infection developed in the fish host. It is likely that Cyclopsspp. can filter out actinospores floating in the water also from natural waters, thus decreasing the chance of development of myxosporean infections.

Összefoglaló. Az elmúlt évtizedekben a várható élettartam emelkedésével drámai mértékben nőtt a demencia előfordulásának gyakorisága, melynek hátterében leggyakrabban az Alzheimer-kór áll. A rendkívül ígéretes, biomarkereken, agyi képalkotáson és mesterséges intelligencián alapuló megközelítéseknek köszönhetően egyre szélesebb körű információink vannak a betegség kialakulásáról és lefolyásáról, új kapukat nyitva ezzel a demencia korai diagnózisa és a személyre szabott terápia felé. Míg az új kutatási irányzatok előnye vitathatatlan, a nagy mennyiségű kutatási adat kezelése, illetve a betegség korai szakaszban történő azonosítása több biztonsági kérdést felvet. A korai diagnózis mellett egyre nagyobb hangsúly helyeződik az intervencióra, a demenciára hajlamosító tényezőkbe történő beavatkozás által.

Summary. As a consequence of increasing life expectancy, the number of those living with dementia is rising. While Alzheimer’s disease (AD) constitutes the most common cause of dementia, the origin of AD is unknown. Furthermore, in the absence of effective treatment, therapy focuses on the cognitive and behavioural symptoms of the disease, and the wellbeing of the patient. AD is characterised by a pronounced impairment experienced in one or more cognitive domains, and the criterion of the diagnosis is the presence of aggregated proteins in the brain leading to neuron death, and eventually to the loss of cognitive abilities.

As a result of the latest technological advances, several biological markers (biomarkers) of AD pathology were identified. The biomarkers can be obtained using positron emission tomography or measured from cerebrospinal fluid, and lately from blood serum and plasma as well. Magnetic resonance imaging provides an important measure of brain atrophy, a biomarker of neurodegeneration and neuronal injury. The structure of the brain shows significant alterations as a function of neuronal loss, with cortical thinning and tissue density changes, mainly starting from the medial temporal lobes (also including the hippocampus playing a prominent role in memory functions), and extending to the temporoparietal regions, with observed changes in the activity of the different functional brain networks as well.

A major challenge in defeating AD is that in most cases, the disease is recognised subsequent to the appearance of the decline in cognitive abilities, hampering everyday life. Previous studies identified a preclinical stage of AD, where the biomarkers indicative of the disease are present in the absence of detectable cognitive symptoms. This early, preclinical stage – with the use of artificial intelligence-based techniques – has been suggested to be a promising window for the early detection of the disease, and also for the prediction of individual disease trajectories, allowing for the thorough planning of patient management. While the benefit of the early diagnosis is unequivocal, it raises a number of important ethical and safety issues.

Besides the tremendous effort of developing effective medical treatments, the importance of intervention stands in the centre of scientific interest. The proposed prevention and intervention methods target the potentially modifiable risk factors of dementia, encouraging engagement in stimulating everyday activities and healthy lifestyle, to preserve longevity.

The incidence of outbreaks of foodborne listeriosis has indicated the need for a reliable and rapid detection of the microbe in different foodstuffs. A method combining redox potential measurement and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was developed to detect Listeria monocytogenes in artificially contaminated raw milk and soft cheese. Food samples of 25 g or 25 ml were homogenised in 225 ml of Listeria Enrichment Broth (LEB) with Oxford supplement, and the redox potential measurement technique was applied. For Listeria species the measuring time was maximum 34 h. The absence of L. monocytogenes could reliably be proven by the redox potential measurement method, but Listeria innocua and Bacillus subtilis could not be differentiated from L. monocytogenes on the basis of the redox curves. The presence of L. monocytogenes had to be confirmed by real-time PCR. The combination of these two methods proved to detect < 10 cfu/g of L. monocytogenes in a cost- and time-effective manner. This method can potentially be used as an alternative to the standard nutrient method for the rapid detection of L. monocytogenes in food.

A leiomyoma a simaizom ritka, jóindulatú daganata, amely előfordulhat bárhol az emberi szervezetben. A szerzők 60 éves nőbeteg kórtörténetét ismertetik, akinél a lágyékhajlatban gigantikus méretű, Müller-cső-eredetű myxoid leiomyoma keltette akut hasi kórkép gyanúját. Orv. Hetil., 2016, 157(10), 392–395.

The potential effect of doxycycline on the microbial activity was investigated in three types of soil. Soil samples were spiked with doxycycline, incubated at 25°C and tested at 0, 2, 4 and 6 days after treatment. The microbiological activity of the soil was characterized by the viable count determined by plate pouring and by the time necessary to reach a defined rate of the redox-potential decrease termed as time to detection (TTD).The viable count of the samples was not changed during the storage. The TTD values, however exhibited a significant increase in the 0.2–1.6 mg/kg doxycycline concentration range compared to the untreated samples indicating concentration-dependent inhibitory effect on microbial activity. The potency of the effect was different in the 3 soil types. To describe the combined effect of the doxycycline concentration and time on the biological activity of one type of soil a mathematical model was constructed and applied. The change of microbial metabolic rate could be measured also without (detectable) change of microbial count when the traditional microbiological methods are not applicable. The applied new redox potential measurement-based method is a simple and useful procedure for the examination of microbial activity of soil and its potential inhibition by antibiotics.

Background and aims

Changes in the nomenclature of addictions suggest a significant shift in the conceptualization of addictions, where non-substance related behaviors can also be classified as addictions. A large amount of data provides empirical evidence that there are overlaps of different types of addictive behaviors in etiology, phenomenology, and in the underlying psychological and biological mechanisms. Our aim was to investigate the co-occurrences of a wide range of substance use and behavioral addictions.

The present epidemiological analysis was carried out as part of the Psychological and Genetic Factors of the Addictive Behaviors (PGA) Study, where data were collected from 3,003 adolescents and young adults (42.6% males; mean age 21 years). Addictions to psychoactive substances and behaviors were rigorously assessed.

Data is provided on lifetime occurrences of the assessed substance uses, their co-occurrences, the prevalence estimates of specific behavioral addictions, and co-occurrences of different substance use and potentially addictive behaviors. Associations were found between (i) smoking and problematic Internet use, exercising, eating disorders, and gambling (ii) alcohol consumption and problematic Internet use, problematic online gaming, gambling, and eating disorders, and (iii) cannabis use and problematic online gaming and gambling.

The results suggest a large overlap between the occurrence of these addictions and behaviors and underlies the importance of investigating the possible common psychological, genetic and neural pathways. These data further support concepts such as the Reward Deficiency Syndrome and the component model of addictions that propose a common phenomenological and etiological background of different addictive and related behaviors.

A Fabry-kór a lizoszomális tárolási betegségek csoportjába tartozó, X-kromoszómához kötötten, recesszív módon öröklődő betegség, amely a globotriaozilceramid felhalmozódásához vezet a szervezet legkülönbözőbb szöveteiben. A betegség első tünetei többnyire gyermekkorban jelentkeznek, a progresszió során a betegek súlyos szervi károsodásokkal és korai halálozással számolhatnak. Elsősorban férfiak érintettek, azonban a betegség tüneteit heterozigóta nők esetében is megfigyelhetjük, de náluk a kórkép súlyossága változó, általában enyhébb lefolyású.
