The liverworts Cololejeunea distalopapillata and C. vidaliana , earlier known to be distributed in Africa and, Africa and certain regions of Asia, respectively, are added to the Indian bryoflora from the Southern Western Ghats. They are provided with a detailed description, notes on habitat and distribution, and an illustration.

Spruceanthus thozetianus , known to be distributed only in Australia so far, is recorded here for India from the southern Western Ghats. A detailed description with information on capsule and spores for the first time is provided here with an illustration and a distribution map.

The liverwort Thysananthus spathulistipus, earlier known to be distributed in the Eastern Himalaya, Northeast India and the Andamans in India, has been rediscovered in the Western Ghats after more than a century. It was last collected by Decoly and Schaul in Kurseong in 1898.Adetailed description of the species, an illustration and a distribution map are provided.

It is concluded that Cololejeunea lanciloba is a highly polymorphic species. As C. kashyapii, C. latilobula and C. udarii are found conspecific with it, they are reduced to synonyms. The description of C. lanciloba is amended to include all the variations now observed. Additional information is provided on habitat.

Abstract

The concentrations of89Sr,90Sr,210Pb and210Po were measured in a series of rain samples collected at Fayetteville (36°N, 94°W), Arkansas, after the 14th Chinese test of March 18, 1972, which occurred at Lop Nor (40°N, 90°E), China. Approximately concordant tropospheric residence times were obtained from the89Sr/90Sr and210Po/210Pb ratios in rain. The89Sr/90Sr ratios were also measured for the rain samples collected at Tokyo (36°N, 140°E), Japan, and at Ankara (40°N, 33°E), Turkey.

While continuous-flow chemistry is steadily increasing its footprint in academic research and in the manufacturing of pharmaceutical intermediates and fine chemicals, the attention for flow chemistry in educational programs is on average rather limited. This account is meant to provide a personal overview of the possibilities to address the involvement of flow chemistry in the various stages of chemical education.

Frullania ramuligera , an overlooked, rare and long-lost liverwort, has been rediscovered in the southern Western Ghats in India after nearly two centuries. Till now the collection made by Perrottet during 1834–1839 in the Nilgiri Hills is the only representative of this species.

Abstract

The potential of thermogravimetric analysis (TG) as a tool for the characterisation of ochre paint used in indigenous Australian bark paintings has been investigated. TG has been combined with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and mass spectrometry (MS) to identify and quantify the main inorganic and organic components present in the paints. The results obtained were supported by comparison with infrared spectra and XRD data obtained for the same specimens. The potential of thermal methods for the characterisation ochres has been demonstrated, with subtle differences between small samples being able to be identified.

Abstract

Ventricular septal rupture (VSR) is a rather rare, but at the same time very dreadful complication of acute myocardial infarction in the percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) era and only limited evidence exist on the optimal treatment of this critical medical condition. VSR is less common following successful early thrombolysis and PCI occurring in myocardium supplied by infarct-related artery (IRA). We report two well-documented cases of successful VSR treatment which will provide valuable information for clinical practice especially due to the long-tem follow-up. Both cases underwent delayed elective surgical closure of VSR. This report clearly describes the incidence, potential risks and timing of occurrence, clinical features, and outcomes of ventricular septal rupture complicating acute myocardial infarction (AMI) after PCI. Hence the topic of this report is of great importance. Although the prognosis of patients who develop VSR is generally grave without immediate surgical repair, both our patients remained hemodynamically stable at discharge and during follow-up of more than 4 years.

Background

Internet gaming disorder (IGD) was introduced in the DSM-5 as a way of identifying and diagnosing problematic video game play. However, the use of the diagnosis is constrained, as it shares criteria with other addictive orders (e.g., pathological gambling).

Aims

Further work is required to better understand IGD. One potential avenue of investigation is IGD’s relationship to the primary reinforcing behavioral functions. This study explores the relationship between duration of video game play and the reinforcing behavioral functions that may motivate or maintain video gaming.

Methods

A total of 499 video game players began the online survey, with complete data from 453 participants (85% white and 28% female), were analyzed. Individuals were placed into five groups based on self-reported hours of video gaming per week, and completed the Video Game Functional Assessment – Revised (VGFA-R).

Results

The results demonstrated the escape and social attention function were significant in predicting duration of video game play, whereas sensory and tangible were not significant.

Conclusion

Future implications of the VGFA-R and behaviorally based research are discussed.
