Abstract  

The present review deals with the radiation chemistry of dilute aqueous solutions of organic substances emphasizing the possibility of use of high energy radiation in wastewater treatment. Effects of radiation on biodegradability, toxicity to water organisms and changes in molecules of solutes showing resistance to biochemical degradation and toxicity to water organisms are discussed.

Abstract  

Model aqueous solutions of bentazone and chlorotoluron /herbicide concentration=200 mg.l–1/ were irradiated with and without simultaneous aeration by -doses in the range 0–52.8 kGy. The degradation of herbicides was studied by UV spectroscopy and chronometric method of herbicide residues determination. The effect of radiation on the biodegradability of bentazone and chlorotoluron solutions were evaluated on the basis of BOD5/COD ratio determination and toxicity of nondiluted model solutions irradiated by doses in the given range to worms Tubifex tubifex was determined.

The effect of -radiation on the aqueous solution of morpholine was studied on the basis of UV spectrum measurement, COD /chemical oxygen demand/, TOC /total organic carbon/ and STOD /short-term oxygen demand/ determination and Pitter's kinetic test of biodegradation. The biodegradability of the model solution after irradiation became substantially worse.

The effect of -radiation on waste water solutions containing 2-mercaptobenzothiazole and N-oxydiethylene-2-benzothiazolesulfenamide was studied by UV spectrosocopy, COD, BOD5 and TOC determination and Pitter's kinetic test of biodegradation. No improvement in biodegradability of model solutions was detected and in case of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole colloidal turbidity removable by coagulation appeared.
