Using the recent student protest in Budapest as context, this essay examines a key role and task of education. While acknowledging the crucial need to prepare students for the labor market and the workplace and to find their place in society, it argues that fundamentally the role and task of education is to enable students to develop fully as human beings. In this sense, it maintains that education is ultimately not about “learning outcomes” but “learner outcome.”
