A detail study of distribution, host range, and seasonal pattern of western flower thrips (WFT),
(Pergande), in Yunnan Province was conducted in 2004–2006. The pest is distributed throughout the province and was found in 22 out of 25 widely spaced locations surveyed. WFT was found feeding on 45 species of vegetables, ornamentals, and weeds in the province. Seasonal pattern of WFT on vegetables planted in open field and inside greenhouses was similar and, with exception of minor local differences, did not differ from information generated elsewhere. These findings may provide some useful data for the management of this and possibly other thrips pests in Yunnan.
Multitracers were prepared by 80 MeV/A 12 C irradiation on thick gold foil at Heavy Ion Research Facility, Institute of Modern Physics, Lanzhou, China. The bulk gold was removed quantitatively from the multitracer solutions with a MIBK-HCl solution.
Garlic is widely used as food flavouring, and China is the world's largest garlic producer and exporter. To develop a convenient technique for evaluation of garlic cultivars would be worthwhile, and it would have wide application in such a huge market. In this research, 3D front-face fluorescence data of 8 garlic cultivars were recorded, and independent component analysis was used to decompose the overall fluorescence spectra into six independent components. The first, second, and fourth independent components showed a big difference among the cultivars, and the chemical fluorophores behind these three components were specified as protein, vitamin B6, and ATP, respectively, as fluorescent markers for evaluation. The result showed that all 8 cultivars cluster separately. The cultivar “YNQJ” have the highest quality in terms of protein and vitamin B6, “NXYC” and “SDHB” have the highest content of ATP, while “SXXA” is the poorest in terms of protein and ATP, and “HNJZ” has the lowest content of vitamin B6. Therefore, rapid evaluation of garlic cultivars can be accomplished successfully by using only the proportion values of three properly selected fluorescent markers.

microcalorimetric determination of displacement adsorption enthalpies ΔH and measurement of adsorbed amounts of guanidine
– denatured lysozyme (Lys) refolding on the surface of hydrophobic interaction
chromatography (HIC) packings at 308 K were carried out and compared with
that at 298 K. Study shows that both temperature and concentration of guanidine
hydrochloride (GuHCl) affect the molecular mechanism of hydrophobic interaction
of protein with adsorbent based on the analysis of dividing ΔH values into three kinds of enthalpy fractions.
The adsorption in higher concentrations of GuHCl (>1.3 mol L–1)
at 308 K is an enthalpy-driving process, and the adsorption under other GuHCl
concentrations is an entropy-driving process. The fact that the Lys denatured
by 1.8 mol L–1 GuHCl forms a relatively stable
intermediate state under the studied conditions will not be changed by temperature.

The method of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with diode array detector (DAD) was used and validated for the simultaneous determination of nine flavonoids (rutin, myricetin, quercitrin, quercetin, luteolin, genistein, kaempferol, apigenin, and isorhamnetin) in beagle dog plasma. Plasma sample was pre-treated with acetonitrile (containing 0.05% formic acid). Chromatographic separation was performed on a kromasil C18 column (250 × 4.6 mm, 5 µm) maintained at 35 °C. The mobile phase was a mixture of methanol and 0.2% formic acid with a step linear gradient. At 1.0 mL min−1 flow rate, the eluent of other eight flavonoids was detected simultaneously at 360 nm with good separation except genistein (detected at 254 nm). Under optimum conditions, the correlation coefficient between the peak area and the concentrations for each analyte was all above 0.999. The intra-day and inter-day precisions were less than 10% for all analytes. The limit of detection and the limit of quantification for the selected nine flavonoids were 0.006–0.03 and 0.02–0.12 g mL−1, respectively. The extracted recoveries of selected nine flavonoids were 74.02%–99.37%. The assay has been successfully applied to determine concentrations of nine flavonoids in plasma from beagle dog after being intravenously administrated Ginkgo biloba extract.

Five giant embryo mutants, described as
MH-gel, MH-ge2, MH-ge3, MH-ge4
, which were derived from the same indica rice
. ‘Minghui 86’ and characterized by 2.0, 1.88, 2.08, 1.93 and 1.88 times enlarged embryo than that of wild type, were selected for the current study. The mutated giant embryos were controlled by a single recessive gene, and except mutated locus with
other four loci were allelic to each other and the previous reported locus
in japonica rice
. ‘Kinmaze’. No obvious differences in physicochemical properties such as apparent amylose content (AAC), alkali spreading value (ASV), gel consistency (GC), and starch paste viscosity were observed between giant embryo mutants and wild type. Significant increases in the contents of crude lipid (LC), crude protein (PC), Vitamin B1 (V
), Vitamin B2 (V
), Vitamin E (V
), essential amino acids such as Arginine (Arg), Aspartic acid (Asp), Glutamic acid (Glu), Lysine (Lys), Methionine (Met), and mineral elements such as calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), potassium (K), phosphorus (P) and zinc (Zn) were detected in brown rice (BR) of giant embryo mutants. The amounts of gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA), an inhibitory neurotransmitter, were similar in the BR of giant embryo mutants and wild type, and more GABA content was observed in germinated brown rice (GBR) than BR. Significant enrichments were detected in the GBR of giant embryo mutants, basically corresponding to the enlarged embryo.

Solvent extraction of protactinium with tri-iso-octyl-amine (TIOA) in xylene, benzene, carbon tetrachloride and chloroform
from HCl, HF, HNO3, HClO4 and H2SO4 media was studied using 233Pa as a radiotracer. The extraction efficiencies of protactinium were determined as a function of shaking time, concentrations
of mineral acids in aqueous phase, extractant concentrations and diluents in organic phase. The extraction mechanism was discussed.
The results show that the extracted species in the organic phase is [(R3N−H)nPa(OH)xCl

Host plant resistance in the form of wheat with the stem lumen filled with pith has been the main strategy to manage the wheat stem sawfly, Cephus cinctus Norton (Hymenoptera: Cephidae) - a major pest of wheat in the northern Great Plains of North America. Recently a new source of resistance has been made available combining a single dominant solid pith gene from durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. var. durum) with spring bread wheat cultivars. Our study had two objectives: (i) assess levels of C. cinctus damage and larval C. cinctus mortality in wheat with the novel solid germplasm, conventional solid-stems and susceptible cultivars; and (ii) determine plant genotype effects on populations of C. cinctus parasitoid Bracon cephi (Gahan) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). The study was conducted in plots near Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada from 2003–2005. The novel solid-stemmed hexaploid G9608B1-L12J11BF02, solid-stemmed AC Eatonia and hollow-stemmed durum AC Navigator reduced the infestation level and girdling damage by C. cinctus. Another synthetic hexaploid B9973B03&AC4AW, hollow-stemmed AC Cadillac, McKenzie and AC Barrie were more susceptible to C. cinctus damage. Larval parasitism by B. cephi increased along with C. cinctus infestation levels. Stem solidness itself, regardless of source, had no direct negative effect on B. cephi but due to lower infestation and survival of C. cinctus in solid stem genotypes, the overall population of parasitoids was reduced. When planting monocultures of effective solid stem wheat, strategies to conserve populations of parasitoids should be considered for long term sustainable management of C. cinctus.

The aim of this paper is to consider using effective natural minerals in studying the retardation and migration of radium under the influence of groundwater in the far-field of a radioactive waste repository. The properties of adsorbing radium by minerals are studied by adopting the static and dynamic adsorption method. Preliminary experimental results give confidence in the validity of using Maifanshih and barite to adsorb radium in water and to serve as effective retarding materials in radioactive waste repositories, their Kd values being 3815 and 2955, respectively. The study on a certain number of conditions of adsorbing radium by the promissing material Maifanshih is reported for the first time. The mechanism of radium adsorption has been discussed and modeling of migration of radium in the minerals has been presented to establish a rational basis for the longterm prediction required for safety assessment of underground disposal of radioactive waste.

The chemical compositions of essential oils extracted by n-hexane extract (HE), petroleum ether extract (PE), dichloromethane extract (DE), and hydrodistillation (HD) from Carthamus tinctorius L. (safflower) were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A total of 86 compounds from four different extracts were identified, and the contents were 97.65%, 98.05%, 98.93%, and 99.68%, respectively. 6,10,14-Trimethyl-2-pentadecanone, hexadecanoic acid, methyl ester, hexadecanoic acid, 8,11-octadecadienoic acid, methyl ester, and 9,12,15-octadecatrien-1-ol were the major constituents of the extracts. The antidiabete activity was assayed in vitro by against protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B). The results showed that the HE exhibited the best in vitro inhibitory enzyme activity against PTP1B, which holds a good potential for treating diabetes and obesity.
