In the 15th and 16th centuries secular medieval Latin songs attracted the attention of musicians. Two examples (Vinum bonum et suave, and Potatores exquisiti), in their medieval and renaissance manifestations, highlight the differences of approach to music in the two period. Both are drinking songs but have associations with sacred repertoire; and seem to be connected to monastic culture; and the two seem to have migrated to disparate regions of Europe.

The detailed treatment of the Latin supine has been neglected both in scholarly literature and in language teaching, even though it is a very ancient form that has survived in an interesting way and was used even in late Latin. The fact that the Latin supine has a parallel in Sanskrit deserves attention. In this study I demonstrate that Priscian projected the Latin usage of his own time back to classical Latin, which fact was nevertheless not detrimental to his credibility.

Abstract

This study attempts to analyse the usability of international databases such as the Science Citation Index (SCI) for the observation of the international collaboration in lesser-developed countries. We have examined the adequacy of this data source (the SCI) in perceiving the international scientific activities of nine Latin American countries. We have studied the relationships of these countries with their main foreign partners in the large fields of science. It has been observed that some of these relationships are not covered by the data source under study. The creation of an information system storing complementary data suited for the identification of existing internatinal collaborative projects is recommended. In the longrange future such a system would provide more appropriate information for the analyses of international collaboration.

“ABSOLUTENESS” OF ABSOLUTE CONSTRUCTIONS When we think about Classical Latin, the only absolute construction that comes to mind is the ablativus absolutus (AA). The name of this construction itself hints at its twofold meaning: the form should be

The present study examines the role classical Latin authors played in the beginnings of Latin literacy in medieval Hungary - from the point of view of the history of libraries. It focuses on four sources: a letter of Bishop Fulbert of Chartres to Bishop Bonipert of Pécs, the Institutio of King Saint Stephen of Hungary, the Deliberatio of Bishop Saint Gerard of Csanád, and the book list of the Benedictine abbey of Pannonhalma.

Abstract

The coverage of Latin American journals by international databases influences the visibility of these countries' scientific output, and has a direct effect in their activity index per scientific discipline. Local, regional and international character of the most visible Latin American journals in SCI expanded and restricted databases is analysed, as well as its influence in the percentage share of each country in certain disciplines. Suggestions to enhance visibility of local journals are presented.

Plutarchos Bruta animalia ratione uti című dialógusának humanista latin fordításai közül a legismertebb Giovanni Regio nevéhez fűződik. Ezzel alkalmunk nyílik a fordítás szövegének további kapcsolatait is megvizsgálni a dialógus másik két latin fordításával, amelyeket Antonio Cassarino és Lampugnino Birago készített néhány évtizeddel korábban.

The present paper aims at examining the phonetic characteristics of the Latin in Narbonensis as reflected by the local inscriptions. Data will be presented from a limited corpus: from Fréjus (Forum Iulii), Antibes (Antipolis), Riez (Reii Apollinares), Digne (Dinia), Aix-en-Provence (Aquae Sextiae), Apt (Apta Iulia), Vienne (Vienna) and their territories. The inscriptions from these areas have been republished recently with the addition of some newly discovered inscriptions. Thus, this epigraphic material needs reconsideration in order to see whether the data collected from the new annotated edition corroborate or refute the existing findings of Vulgar Latin research.
