This paper examines how we might test the continuum theory against the community unit theory. Adherence to one or other of these models without testing is simply an assignment of an extreme prior probability to the preferred option. The question can be rephrased to ask whether, for a set of observations, a single model is adequate or whether a mixture of models would be preferable. To judge between them involves first defining the nature of the model(s) to be fitted in each case and then comparing the complexity and quality of fit. Occam's razor suggests that we should seek the simplest model with adequate fit, with parameters estimated with optimal precision. The simplest comparison of the two theories thus requires only the estimation of the number of clusters for the chosen model(s) of within-cluster variation. If a single cluster is of adequate quality then the continuum model is appropriate, while if several are needed then the community model is preferable for that particular dataset. To establish universal applicability of either model involves investigation of many datasets. There are several ways in which model quality can be assessed, and here I concentrate on the minimal message length principle which is a function of the prior probability of the model and its fit to the observed data, assuming the model to be correct. This principle has been shown to perform well when compared with other possibilities. I first illustrate the procedure for making a choice between models, using a simple model, then examine two alternative formulations of within-cluster models which seem more appropriate, one static, the other dynamic.

Adenosine diphosphate glucose pyrophosphorylase (AGPase) is the rate limiting enzyme of starch biosynthesis that directly affects the wheat productivity. AGPase and grain growth rate (GGR) discerned to be following strict temperature regimen in wheat disomic chromosome substitution (DCS) lines. The first half of grain filling period had chromosome 1B and 2D as prominent players, whereas second half was mainly controlled by chromosomes 6A and 5B. Chromosome 2D had major contribution towards yield in a specific temperature range of 23 ± 1.5 °C during initial stages of grain filling which can serve as an effective early screening tool for terminal heat tolerance in wheat. Chromosome 2D with highest amylose content can also be utilized to produce low digestibility flour. Grain yield was found to be significantly associated with spikes/plant, grains/spike, grain weight/spike and plant biomass. Further, path analysis indicated that though grains/spike had less direct effect on grain yield but its indirect impact on grain yield via AGPase-21 activity was high.

In this essay, I examine the role of induction in developing vegetation models. Falsification is a necessary component of model building but is not itself sufficient. Induction provides a necessary complement and one that dethrones the null hypothesis from its privileged state. After examining the role of description and environment, I examine several possible criteria useful for valorising models so that we may choose the 'best'.These criteria include fit, simplicity, precision and interest. Predictability, which is given overwhelming importance in a falsification approach, is found to be ambiguous. It may be obtained by using multiple models without regard to the processes active in the real system. In addition movement towards a model which does reflect the 'real' processes can result in loss of predictivity. Finally, some comments are made on what we can infer and how this relates to our understanding of living systems.

Az FVM Mezőgazdasági Gépesítési Intézet rendelkezik egy csúcstechnológiát képviselő távérzékelési eszközzel, az AISA DUAL hiperspektrális szenzorral. A berendezés 400–970 és 970–2500 nm hullámhossz tartományban tud érzékelni, ezen belül igen nagy (2–10 nm-es) felbontásban. A berendezés képes egy adott hullámhossz tartományon belül képet készíteni, ahol a denzitás eltéréssel a reflexió változását képszerűen is láthatjuk. A felvett objektum bármely pontjáról a spektrum függvényében fel tudjuk rajzolni a reflektancia változását. A nyersen rögzített képek radiometriás korrekciója, valamint georektifikációja (pl. a repülőgép billegéséből adódó hibák kiszűrését) speciális CaliGeo program segítségével végezhető el. A detektált képek további célirányos feldolgozását az ENVI 4.1 térinformatikai szoftver biztosítja. A képi információkat GIS-ben tárolhatjuk, így a terepi munkák, a mintavételezés pontosan végrehajtható. A berendezés hatékonyan használható képalkotó-berendezés és spektrofotométerként egyszerre. A precíziós mezőgazdaság és a környezetgazdálkodás területén egyre nagyobb szerepet fog betölteni a hiperspektrális távérzékelési technika. Az AISA DUAL rendszer hazai alkalmazása új lehetőségeket teremt mind a gyakorlati alkalmazás, mind a kutatás területén.
