On 13 September 1987, a severe radiation accident occurred in the city of Goiânia in central Brazil. Approximately 250 people were directly affected by the radiation, receiving slight to very severe external, partial or whole body, irradiation, and presenting internal and external contamination. Fourteen patients developed some degree of marrow failure, eight developed the clinical signs and symptoms of acute radiation syndrome (ARS), and four eventually died of ARS complications. Twenty-eight people showed acute localized radiation injuries ranging from first to third degree. The author describes the circumstances of the event, the first-aid measures taken on the site, and the medical structure organized to triage and treat the casualties. Aspects relating to hospital contamination control, radiation protection and decontamination procedures are also discussed.

A new variant of a technique for determining ion mobilities by means of horizontal zone electrophoresis in free solutions is developed. Setup circuit is presented. Some details of experiment and results of measuring limiting mobilities of131I-and160Tb3+ are given. On these examples the reproductibility was checked.
A new version of TLC with a closed adsorbent layer and an electroosmotic pump has been investigated. The electroosmotic pump was placed on the front of the plate and used to induce rapid movement of the mobile phase. Experimental evaluation of the new version of forced-flow TLC suggests further elaboration of this version of TLC is appropriate.

Nuclear medicine and radiotherapy make a vital contribution to the diagnosis and treatment of major disease. This role is likely to expand with new developments including availability of new medical isotopes. A European network (EMIR) was initiated in 2001 by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission, to identify and solve difficulties that constrain nuclear medicine and radiotherapy development in Europe and facilitate closer interdisciplinary collaboration. Participating organisations include the main European associations of medical radiation specialists, radiopharmaceutical/radioisotope producers, nuclear research reactor institutions, research organizations and the JRC. The steering committee established task groups focusing on eight key areas for development. Liaison with non-European organizations will be encouraged.

Two different botanical sources, Eclipta alba and Wedelia calendulacea are used as “Bhringaraja” in the Ayurvedic s ystem o f medicine. In the present study, an effort has been made to evaluate different sources by using high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) as an analytical tool. Wedelolactone, one of the primary constituents of these plants, was taken as the marker compound for the evaluation. An HPTLC method was developed and validated for the evaluation of different sources of “Bhringaraja”. The chromatographic system was developed using silica gel 60 F254 HPTLC plates with the mobile phase toluene–chloroform–ethyl alcohol–formic acid (5:4:1:0.5, v/v). Linearity was found between the concentration ranges of 80 to 280 ng spot−1 (R2: 0.9994), and limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were found to be 0.36 ng spot−1 and 1.09 ng spot−1. The study has shown the presence of wedelolactone at the concentration of 0.26% w/w and 0.05% w/w in E. alba and W. calendulacea, respectively, whereas it was absent in another closely related species, Wedelia trilobata. At the same time, all the three plants were subjected to evaluation of quality-control parameters as per the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. Certain parameters such as foaming index, total alkaloids, and total bitter principles were significantly different in the three plants. Hence, the present HPTLC method development, and the validation and evaluation of quality-control parameters would be helpful in the standardization of individual plants and their formulations.
