The study, as part of the preparatory research of the region in the Open-air Museum of Ethnography, is a short summary of the ideas relating to a building plot from Hétfalu in Transylvania. The planned exhibition is not the scene and tool of the transmission of static knowledge but it provides the opportunity of a dynamic discourse relating to existing knowledge. Along the topic of traffi c the presentation of the culture in Hétfalu is appropriate to answer recent questions such as identity preserved in a multiethnical environment or the cultural marks sustained even in a diaspora which, in our present day, can carry serious confl icts.

Because the creation of a skanzen can never be finished, the Hungarian Open Air Museum elaborated new strategies to expand the museum’s research and widen the time, social and geographical horizons of its exhibitions. This led to the idea of the group of 20th-century buildings.What makes the research programme of the Hungarian Open Air Museum novel by international standards is that it wishes to present not individual examples but the most important, emblematic buildings of a period in the form of a group of buildings with the related interior furnishing, changes in lifestyle, way of life and lifeworld models in a “regional unit”.
