Abstract
The adducts of Co, Ni, Cu, Zn and Pb saccharinates with 2,2'-bipyridine were synthesized and their thermal behaviour in the 20–1000°C temperature interval in a static air atmosphere was investigated. Regardless of the coordination, the decomposition starts with dehydration and proceeds with removal of the bipyridine ligand(s). The resulting metal(II) saccharinates adopt characteristic two-step decomposition, the first step being the SO2 release. Their stability was found tobe metal-dependent. The thermal decomposition pathways were correlated with the existing structural data about the compounds.
The risk of individual investment in higher education is not a well-researched topic compared to the rate of return to education. In many countries tuition fees are low, but there is a possibility to borrow for investment in education. This can lead to irresponsible investment behaviour. The paper will show that the student loan market is too small to cause a macroeconomic crisis, but that it is a market with many stakeholders and irresponsible behaviour should not be encouraged. With the examination of a Hungarian sample, it can be concluded that in the context of higher education, signs of rational investment behaviour can be found. The risks of post-secondary studies are not yet fully understood and measured, and for this reason further research is suggested.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine efficiency and its determinants in a set of higher education institutions (HEIs) from several European countries by means of non-parametric frontier techniques. Our analysis is based on a sample of 259 public HEIs from 7 European countries across the time period of 2001–2005. We conduct a two-stage DEA analysis (Simar and Wilson in J Economet 136:31–64, ), first evaluating DEA scores and then regressing them on potential covariates with the use of a bootstrapped truncated regression. Results indicate a considerable variability of efficiency scores within and between countries. Unit size (economies of scale), number and composition of faculties, sources of funding and gender staff composition are found to be among the crucial determinants of these units’ performance. Specifically, we found evidence that a higher share of funds from external sources and a higher number of women among academic staff improve the efficiency of the institution.
