Nikolai Iakovlevich Bichurin (archimandrite Iakinf)(Николай Яковлевич Бичурин, архимандритИакинф) was a famous Russian diplomat, traveller, orientalist and sinologist, who established in Russia the classical school of East Asian studies and the tradition of academic research on China. However, his personality has been subject to severe criticism among scholars. For many historians Bichurin was a great scholar of the Russian Empire in the 19th century, while his opponents believe that he was just a bad priest with several vices which cast a shadow on his achievements. Moreover, the available information about certain aspects of his life and activities is fragmentary. The aim of this article is to present the life of Bichurin and his role in founding East Asian studies in Russia, analyse several important episodes in his life and achievements, and reconsider the views held about him in scholarship.

Studies were conducted to characterize the chestnut starch for physico-chemical properties. Chemical composition of chestnut starch showed low levels of protein and ash indicating purity of starch. The results revealed low water and oil absorption capacity of chestnut starch. Starch showed high swelling power and low solubility index. Swelling power and solubility index of chestnut starch increased with increase in temperature (50–90 °C). The results revealed high initial, peak, setback, breakdown, and final viscosity but low paste development temperature. Transmittance (%) of the starch gel was low and decreased with increasing storage period. The chestnut starch gel showed increase in % water release (syneresis) with increase in time of storage but was less susceptible to repeated cycles of freezing and thawing. Starch was also characterized for granule morphology. Starch granules were of round and oval shapes, some granules showed irregular shape.

The increased generation of free radicals plays an important role in testicular damage. The present study aimed to investigate the adverse effects of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) on the reproductive system of male rats as well as to examine whether Vitamin E (VE) is able to ameliorate these effects. The rats were equally divided into three groups: control, CCl4-treated, and CCl4 + VE-treated groups. After 4 weeks of treatment, the decrease in body and testes weights, sperm parameters, and the decrease in serum levels of testosterone, luteinizing hormone, and follicle-stimulating hormone of CCl4-treated rats were ameliorated by VE treatment. The co-administration of VE with CCl4 significantly decreased the level of lipid peroxidation production (malondialdehyde) and increased the activity of anti-oxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase and catalase) when compared with the CCl4 group. Moreover, VE prevented CCl4-induced severe testicular histopathological lesions and deformities in spermatogenesis. The results demonstrate that VE augments the anti-oxidants’ defense mechanism against CCl4-induced reproductive toxicity suggesting a therapeutic role in free radical-mediated infertility.
