Daedalus in the Metamorphoses may be interpreted as one of Ovid's typical artist figures, like Pygmalion or Arachne. A detailed comparative analysis of Ovid's two Daedalus-Icarus episodes, and similarly the structure of Met. VIII 183-259 go to show that here is Icarus in the limelight as an artist-allegory, serving to express the poet's view on poetry and his own role in it. His winged artist refuses the Horatian middle course and approaches to the winged soul of Plato's Phaedrus, representing at the same time the tragical impossibility of its attempt.

Pygmalion és Arachne figuráját Ovidius paradigmatikus művészábrázolásaként tartjuk számon. Magától értetődne a Metamorphoses VIII. énekében szereplő Daedalus-epizód hasonló értelmezése. A részlet elemzése és összehasonlítása a téma Ars Amatoria-beli feldolgozásával ugyanakkor egyértelművé teszik, hogy a későbbi változat középpontjába az archetipikus Daedalus helyett Icarus alakja kerül. Ő jeleníti meg egyúttal az ovidiusi költőideál számos markáns vonását: meghatározva szerzőnk viszonyát a közönséghez, az idejét múlt vagy éppen kisszerűnek tartott művészi magatartásformákhoz, saját költői ambíciói beteljesülhetetlenségéhez.

Thysanoptera species are recorded as new for the Dutch fauna: Aeolothripidae: Aeolothrips fasciatus, Thripidae: Stenchaetothrips biformis s.s., Dendrothrips degeeri, Mycterothrips annulicornis, Mycterothrips salicis, Odontothrips ignobilis, Oxythrips ulmifoliorum, Neohydatothrips gracilicornis, Thrips origani, and Phlaeothripidae: Bolothrips icarus, Haplothrips setiger. These species are known to occur elsewhere in Europe. Stenchaetothrips biformis is suspected to consist of two species: S. biformis s.s. and possibly S. oryzae. S. biformis s.s. is recorded here for the first time for Germany. Thrips inopinatus and T. fallaciosus are synonymized with  T. roepkei, which was described after a monstruose female-type specimen. Hoplothrips arnoudi is considered a junior synonym of H. pedicularius.

Abstract  

It is presented a study concerning the influence of guanidinium chloride (GuHCl) and urea on thermal stability of Bovine Pancreatic Ribonuclease A (RNAase A) at differentpH values. As expected, at increasing the denaturant concentration, the protein thermostability decreases. This is shown by a decrease of both the thermodynamic parameters, temperature and heat effect, characterising the denaturation process. In order to analyse the calorimetric curves we adopt a statistical thermodynamic approach. The individual one-dimensional DSC profiles have been expanded into another dimension by varying the GuHCl concentration, so that a heat capacity surface is defined for eachpH. By means of the ICARUS program, developed in our laboratory, we accomplish a two dimensional deconvolution of the experimental data linking the binding equilibrium to the denaturation process. This analysis provides a well founded and complete statistical thermodynamic characterisation of denaturation process of RNAase A in the presence of GuHCl and allows to calculate the thermodynamic parameters associated to the binding of denaturant molecule.

The Imperata cylindrica-mediated chromosome elimination approach has been identified as the most efficient system of doubled haploidy breeding in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The present investigation was carried out to assess the mean performance of diverse I. cylindrica genotypes (five) collected from different locations and wheat F1s (21) generated out of various elite winter and spring wheat ecotypes. Also, the proportional contribution of wheat F1s and I. cylindrica genotypes was evaluated to find out the relative contribution of maternal and paternal parents to haploid induction. The investigation revealed that the mean response of wheat and I. cylindrica to haploid induction parameters, viz. pseudoseed formation, embryo formation, haploid regeneration and haploid formation varies from wheat and I. cylindrica genotype to genotype. The I. cylindrica genotype, Ic-Aru from north east Himalayas and wheat genotype, DH 114 × KWS 29 exhibited highest mean performance to haploid embryo formation, the stage for which all the three contributors, that is, wheat F1s, I. cylindrica genotypes and wheat × I. cylindrica interaction were found to be similar for their proportional contribution (%) towards haploid induction. Thus, concluding that the haploid induction through preferential chromosome elimination approaches can be enhanced by using more efficient pollinators.
