ABSTRACT

This contribution argues that Zhu Quan’s (1378–1448) apotheosis must be interpreted as a paratextual discourse on authorship. Substantiating this claim, this article discusses how the extant editions of the Divine Pivot Ready to Hand construct the king’s divine authorship. In its three sections, the article examines the physical, paratextual and ritual dimensions of his apotheosis. Focusing on the last chapter of the Pivot, it demonstrates that calendars serve as a material cum textual media through which to posit Zhu Quan’s divine status. In a dialogue with the field of ritual studies, the article explains to what degree Zhu Quan’s calendars may be interpreted as an act of ritual textualisation.

Abstract

Finite element analysis is used to explore composites of negative thermal expansion materials with positive thermal expansion materials (ZrW2O8 in Cu and ZrO2 in ZrW2O8) and evaluate how thermal and mechanical properties, rates of cooling/heating, and geometry and packing fraction influence the overall expansion and thermal stress. During rapid temperature changes, the transient short-time thermal expansion can be considerably larger than the steady-state value. Furthermore, thermal stress in the composite can be large, especially at the interface between the materials, and can exceed the material strength.

Eight inorganic substances recommended by ICTA as temperature standard reference materials for DTA and DSC were studied: KNO3, KClO4, Ag2SO4, K2CrO4, quartz, K2SO4, BaCO3 and SrCO3. The content of pure component in each of these substances was determined by classical chemical analysis. The temperatures and the heats of polymorphic transformations of these substances were measured with a Perkin-Elmer DSC-2 differential scanning calorimeter, and DTA studies were performed on a MOM 1500 D Q-derivatograph. The plot heat of transformation by DSCvs. DTA peak area is advanced as a calibration line for the approximate estimation of quantitative DTA effects. The substances studied will be certified as temperature standard reference materials for use in DTA and DSC.
