Summary By employing a novel idea and simple techniques, we substantially generalize the Turán type inequality for rational functions with real zeros and prescribed poles established by Min [5] to include L p spaces for 1≤ p ≤ ∞ while loosing the restriction ρ > 2 at the same time.

Abstract

Atmospheric particulate samples were collected at the geographic South pole, using cellulose and polycarbonate filters and cascade impactors. The samples were analysed for 40 elements by instrumental neutron activation analysis. From the filter samples atmospheric concentrations for 33 elements could be obtained. The highest atmospheric concentrations were found for S: 49 ng/standard cubic meter (SCM) of air, Na: 3.3 ng/SCM and Cl: 2.6 ng/SCM. In the cascade impactor samples, only a few elements were observed above blank. For these elements it could be concluded that they are associated for over 80–90% with submicron size paricles.

Among the wealth of German operettas, an important place is occupied by works referring to Polish subjects in their plots, or featuring Polish characters. The moral judgments passed on the persons of the drama frequently reveal generalisations concerning large communities or even entire nations. At the present stage of research, I can confirm the existence of about a dozen German operettas containing Polish motives. For my analysis, I have selected three operettas: Polnische Wirtschaft, Polenblut and Die blaue Mazur, composed in more or less the same period – the 1910s. An analysis of characters and topics recurring in these operettas proves that certain prejudices and stereotypes play a major role in the construction of events and the characterisation of dramatis personae. An important role in the creation of national stereotypes is also played by musical categories associated with Polish culture, mainly national dances – the krakowiak and the mazur. The three stage works discussed in this paper, created in a period of historical transformation associated with Poland’s rebirth as an independent country, appear to offer excellent arguments in the ongoing debate on the role of national stereotypes in communication between neighbouring nations.

This article underlines the close connection between the disappointing performance of the Ottoman central army during the siege of Khotin, which was defended by the forces of the Polish — Lithuanian Commonwealth in the fall of 1621, and the regicide of the Ottoman sultan Osman II in the spring of 1622. Interpreting the regicide of Osman II within the larger context of the Ottoman military rebellions of the late 16th century and the later depositions of the 17th century, this study suggests looking at the history of the Ottoman Empire in 17th and 18th centuries from a fresh perspective that would emphasise the transformation of the Ottoman political structures in this period to create — what the author calls — the “Second Empire”.

Abstract

The article examines the history of the trade in Polish slaves and captives in the Tatar and Ottoman Crimea in the seventeenth century on the basis of hitherto unknown archival evidence and rare printed sources. After the capture an average Polish slave of simple origin was transported to the Crimea, where he had been sold on the local slave markets. Unless he had some special qualifications, a slave usually had to fulfil agricultural duties and do heavy manual work. The slaves usually had some limited free time and could attend Catholic services in the churches of the Crimea's large urban centres. Rich Polish captives were treated in accordance with their high social status and were ransomed for a considerable redemption fee. Important role in ransoming such rich captives was played by Jewish, Tatar and Armenian merchants.

Abstract

The temperature transitions for a series of flexible polymers containing propylene units were studied by dynamic mechanical spectroscopy. It was found that the gradual activation of the local motion of different structural units involved in polymers occurs with increasing temperature. Initially, the rotation of the side groups, such as side methyl groups, is activated and on further heating the main chain structural units show their local motions. It is important that the temperature interval of the appearance of the local motion of each structural unit is almost independent of the presence of other structural units. Accordingly, the polymers investigated can be divided into two groups. The activation of the local motion of the most rigid structural unit determines the glass transition in the first group of polymers. The glass transition of the polymers of the second group takes place at a higher temperature which depends on the content of side methyl groups and the intermolecular interaction. The increased influence of both these factors on the cooperative amorphous motion of polymers of the second group leads to their increased T g values.
