Abstract  

The synergistic effect on the extraction of thorium(IV) was found by the combination of 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone (Htta) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) or 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (dpp) as a neutral bidentate ligand. Especially in the presence of dpp (1·10–3M) in benzene, the distribution ratio of thorium(IV) increased by a factor of about 300. Such synergistic enhancement of the extraction was ascribed to the formation of the adduct complex of Th(tta)4(phen) and Th(tta)4(dpp) in the organic phase. The extraction constant and the adduct formation constant were determined and discussed.

Some popular neutral extractants (PSO-petroleum sulfoxide, DOSO-di-n-octyl sulfoxide, TBP-tributylphosphate etc.) were chosen as synergist to study the synergistic effect on the extraction reaction with HBMPPT (4-benzoyl-2,4-dihydro-5-methyl-2-phenyl-3H-pyrazol-3-thione) for U(VI), and the synergistic separation ability of HBMPPT for U(VI) and Th(IV). The synergistic extraction ability shown by the studied systems for U(VI) is as follows: PSO>DOSO>TBP, and the same sequence was also verified for the separation coefficient of U(VI) and Th(IV). The synergistic complexes may be presented as: UO2NO3·BMPPT·S and UO2(BMPPT)2·S for U(VI) (S is PSO, DOSO or TBP).

Abstract  

Liquid-liquid extraction of zirconium(IV) was investigated from dilute hydrochloric acid medium by salicyaldoxime (HA) in dichloromethane. The metal was spiked with 95Zr and analyzed by its radioactivity. The effects of different donors, like trioctyl phosphine oxide (TOPO), triphenyl phosphine oxide (TPPO), tributyl phosphine oxide (TBPO), tributyl phosphate (TBP), trioctyl amine (TOA) and Amberlite LA-2 were studied. The adduct formation constants for both binary species (metal-ligand) and ternary species (metal-ligand-donor) were also calculated form the distribution data.

Abstract  

The synergistic effects of zinc oxide (ZnO) with layered double hydroxides (LDH) in ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer/LDH (EVA/LDH) composites have been studied using thermal analysis (TG), limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 tests, and cone calorimeter test (CCT). The results from the UL-94 tests show that the ZnO can also act as flame retardant synergistic agents in the EVA/LDH composites. The CCT data indicated that the addition of ZnO in EVA/LDH system can greatly reduce the heat release rate. The TG data show that the ZnO can increase the thermal degradation temperature and the charred residues after burning.
