Abstract  

A data acquisition system and the SAD2 software, that provide characteristic cooling curves, in combination with microstructure analysis were used to study precipitates formation in the AA380.0 aluminium alloys modified by adding extra magnesium. The samples were solidified with distinct cooling rates caused by carrying out the solidification in shell and permanent molds. The mathematics processing of the cooling curves in agreement with the microstructure analysis have confirmed the remarkable presence of both the Al–Si dendrite network and the Mg2Si interdendritic phase in the alloys with the addition of extra magnesium.

Abstract  

N, O, F, P, S, Cl can be mixed with aluminium during electrolysis, alloying operations and surface treatments. These elements allow changes in mechanical properties. We have adapted separation methods to neutron activation analysis of aluminium alloys down to the sub—ppm level. N, F, Cl, determinations need distillation. S and P separations are based on liquid extraction. O determination is carried out by instrumental method. Tracers and inactive carriers are used for separation study. Clearning of the surface is performed if necessary. 14 MeV neutron activation is applied to nitrogen, oxygen and fluorine determination. The sensitivity is about 200 imp/min/mg. Reactor neutron activation is performed for phosphorus, sulfur and chlorine analysis. The detection level is 0.1 μg/g. Interesting differences of N, O, F, and Cl contents are observed for Al−Zn or Al−Cu alloys in the range 0.1–10 μg/g.

Abstract  

In order to study the application of the new developed internal standard method to charged-particle activation analysis, simultaneous determination of Ti, Cr, Fe, Cu, Ga and Zr in several commercial aluminium alloys has been tried using the respective proton-induced reactions. As a result, it could be proved that the best precision and accuracy are also obtained in these determinations.

Abstract  

The silicon content in an aluminum-silicon alloy was measured by nondestructive fast neutron activation analysis with fission spectrum neutrons. A boron nitride irradiation container reduced the flux of thermal and epithermal neutrons at the sample position, enhancing the29Si (n, p)29Al reaction. A detection limit of 0.4% silicon in a 0.5 g alloy sample was obtained.
