From the days of the Republic, amor always had a certain amount of ambiguity, meaning not merely sexual passion but also a range of both positive and negative connotations. 1 In Catullus we see a wariness of its allures (in poem 66, he tells

Quid sit Amor… •

The vision of love as destructive force in Sappho's fragments and in Vergil's Eclogues

Acta Antiqua Academiae Scientiarum Hungaricae
Author:
Jelena Pilipović

Nunc scio quid sit Amor , “Now I know what Love is”, says one of Vergil's Arcadian shepherds. 1 This exclamation is not a cognitive but an emotional statement, whose intertextual roots go back to Homer's Iliad (16. 33–35) and preserves its epic

Following the ancient and the Arabic traditions of amor hereos, medieval physicians perpetuated the definition of love as a form of melancholy, a kind of insanity of atrabiliar origin, accompanied by intense fear and sorrow. This study investigates, on the one hand, the ambiguous medieval notions of melancholy and lovesickness, often included in a similar etiologic and nosologic framework, and the original contribution offered to this medical tradition by Arnold of Villanova, a Catalan physician of the 13th century. On the other hand, the paper attempts an analysis of the relationship between medical doctrine and literary theory, exploring the psychological-physical definition of amorous passion elaborated in what could be considered a sort of encyclopaedia of medieval love, in De amore by Andreas Capellanus.

The thermal transformations of a number of modelo-amic acids were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TG). The TG data pointed to cyclodehydration of the amic acids and accompanying thermal degradation processes. TG in combination with mass-spectrometric thermal analysis provided sufficient information for the description of these processes on both qualitative and quantitative levels.

This study deals with a so far not too often analysed old Provençal short story, which is a particular version of Sleeping Beauty. After an analysis of biblical vocabulary background and a presentation of various hidden oppositions in the novas, the paper focuses on the meaning of the speaking names, on the miracles and on the duplicated persons. As the second young couple plays a crucial role in the plot, it is necessary to find its identity and comprehensive literary function. The study concludes affirming that the short story shows the decline of fin'amor by a charming mixture of Christian, antique and popular beliefs. Among the three, it is the third that prevails, as the magic herb seems strong enough to wake up the dead princess. Even though the fin'amors ideology is still present, it is not predominating any more and cannot resolve the greatest human tragedy.

Módszer: Korábban súlyos (inzulinnal kezelt) vagy enyhe (diétával kezelt) gestatiós diabetesen átesett 40 nő nagyartériáinak funkcióját applanációs tonometriával, a mikrokeringést provokációs tesztek elvégzése során lézer-Doppler-módszerrel vizsgálták. Következtetések: Az eredmények alapján az előzetesen igazolt gestatiós diabetes súlyossága befolyásolja a kialakuló microvascularis diszfunkció mértékét, amelyet emelkedett oxidatív stressz kísér. A nitratív stressz és a poli(ADP-ribóz)-polimeráz-aktiváció összefüggést mutat egyes vascularis paraméterekkel, bár ezek mértékét a betegség súlyossága nem befolyásolja. Orv. The polymer-polymer interactions of a polyamic acid (PAA) with polybases (polyvinylpyrrolidone, polyacrylonitrile and polyvinylpyridine) were studied by means of massspectrometric thermal analysis (MTA), TG, DTA and IR-spectroscopic methods in solution and in the solid state. The polybases were shown to substitute the solvent from its complex with PAA, forming H-bonds or salt-type polycomplexes with PAA. The MTA method proved to be very informative for the investigation of interpolymer interactions in the solid state.

Abstract

Fly ash is the ash precipitated from the exhaust fumes of coal-fired power stations. It consists mainly of active silica and alumina, with large amounts of glass. The aim of this work was to study the pozzolanic activity of fly ash with lime by means of DTA as a function of the lime content and the curing time. The curves revealed that the rate of hydration, as indicated by the residual lime and hydrated compounds, increases with increasing lime content and curing time. It is concluded that fly ash can be used as a blending material in pozzolanic cement.
