Az elhízás a XXI. század civilizációs betegsége. A magyar lakosság 62%-a túlsúlyos, 27%-a pedig elhízottnak számít, így különösen nagy érdeklődést kelthet az elhízás kezelése. A szerzők a kóros elhízás fogalmának és társult betegségeinek áttekintése után a műtéti beavatkozásokat veszik sorra. A gyomorgyűrűt övező kezdeti lelkesedés mára elmúlt, mivel a hosszú távú eredmények csak korlátozott testsúlycsökkenést igazolnak, akár 50%-ot megközelítő szövődményrátával. A sleeve gastrectomia 60–70%-os testsúlyfelesleg-csökkenést hoz létre, azonban még nem állnak rendelkezésre 10 évnél hosszabb, műtét utáni adatok. A gyomorbypass jelenleg a bariátriai műtétek etalonja, igazolt hosszú távú 60–75%-os testsúlyfelesleg-csökkentéssel, és a 2-es típusú cukorbetegség remissziós rátája a 80%-ot is elérheti. A jelentős testsúlycsökkenést általában a testkép megváltozása követi, így gyakran további alakformázó plasztikai sebészeti beavatkozás szükséges. Despite numerous studies on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and its importance during hydrocephalus or myelography, no reliable values exist about its overall volume in dogs. In this study, our aim was to measure the intracranial (IC) volume of CSF in dogs and assess its possible relationship with body size and the symmetry of the lateral ventricles. We ran a 3D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequence on the central nervous system of 12 healthy, male mongrel dogs between 3–5 years of age and 7.5–35.0 kg body weight. A validated semiautomatic segmentation protocol was implemented to segment the CSF and measure its volume. Values for the volume of the ventricular compartment were between 0.97 and 2.94 ml, with 62.1 ± 11.7% in the lateral ventricles, 17.6 ± 4.9% in the third ventricle, 4.9 ± 1.6% in the aqueductus mesencephali and 15.5 ± 6.6% in the fourth ventricle. In 11 cases a significant asymmetry was found between the lateral ventricles. The results suggest that it may be normal for a dog to have one of the lateral ventricles 1.5 times larger than the other. The correlation between body weight and CSF volume was linear, indicating that the current dosage protocols for myelography, based on a hypothetical proportional relationship with body weight, may have to be revised.

This is a preliminary report on the benefit of a weekly low glycemic load (GL) diet intervention designed to positively effect body weight (BW) and body composition by reducing satiety in overweight/obese (BMI=28.38±5.86 kg m −2 ) pre-pubertal children over a 12-week period. Thirteen otherwise healthy (11.46±1.94 years) children participated in the study. The low GL diet intervention included attending a weekly nutrition consultation, exchanging of at least 50% of the high glycemic index (GI) foods with low GI foods in the diet and portion control. Dietary changes were made based on weekly 4-day food-diaries over the 12-weeks. There were significant reductions in BW (68.08±22.03 vs. 65.64±22.12 kg), body mass index (BMI; 28.38±5.86 vs. 27.09±6.2 kg m −2 ), fat mass (26.02±12.8 vs. 23.64±12.8 kg) % body fat (36.82±6.1 vs. 33.81±7.4), and circumference measurements; waist (95.73±14.01 vs. 90.76±14.26 cm); hip circumference (97.23±13.37 vs. 93.34±18.80 cm); thigh circumference (59.08±7.9 vs. 56.80±8.1 cm). The significant reduction of self-reported hunger level (3.46±0.92 vs. 1.51±1.11) was also observed. The 12-week low GL diet seems to be a practical, effective approach to treat obesity in children.

Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA) and Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) spectrometry were used to determine the concentration of trace metals in marine bivalveAnadara granosa. A total of 11 elements: Mg, Cl, Mn, K, Se, Br, Zn, Co, Fe, Rb, Cd and Cu were detected. Analyses were performed to examine the relationship between metal concentration and body weight. Results from both techniques show linear relationship between total metal concentration and body weight.
