Some events are too distasteful and coarse to be approached without linguistic ‘gymnastics’ or ‘maneuvering’. One of these is undoubtedly death, a timeless taboo in which psychological, religious, and social interdictions coexist. This paper investigates the conceptualization and translation of the euphemistic metaphorical encoding operative in Arabic death discourse, particularly in a selected corpus consisting of 450 obituaries, drawn from three respectable Jordanian newspapers, where the sentimentalization of death, deriving from orthodox Muslim beliefs, provided a fertile soil for the burgeoning of metaphorical fatalism-laden euphemism. Given the pervasiveness of metaphor to refer to human mortality, the present study utilizes the influential “Conceptual Metaphor Theory” advanced by Lakoff and Johnson (1980) to account for the different conceptual metaphors, and their relevant linguistic instantiations which substituted the notions of death and dying. The analysis also reveals that the translation hurdles encountered essentially originate from the fact that Arabic and English offer conflicting prototypical models of agency, thereby landing the translator with the laborious task of negotiating the meaning between two contrasting cultural models, which has been found to strip the source language text from its dynamism, and, consequently, to procure irredressable translation loss, however satisfactory the translation equivalents may be.
This paper explores the ways of displaying anger in the Russian linguistic image of the world. According to the National Corpus of the Russian Language, anger dims eyes, makes blind and mad. In metaphorical projections, anger is defined in relation to the structural elements of other subject areas, including fluid, wild animals, natural disasters, fire, lightning, or thunderstorm. By analogy with some resources, anger is collected, wasted, and exhausted; by analogy with water, anger overflows and boils; by analogy with fire, inflames, and fades, anger can flare up and fade; by analogy with wild animals, it can be curbed, tamed, or subdue. It is quite common that speakers do not pay attention to metaphorical expressions but take them almost for the objective characteristic of anger.
Magyarországon a politikai pszichológiai folyamatokra inkább csak a publicisták, a közvélemény-kutatók, valamint a filozófusok és szociálpszichológusok, a politikai elemzők írásaiban találhatunk utalásokat, pedig fontos lenne, hogy a politikai intézményekre összpontosító jogtudományok, a társadalmi struktúrákra fokuszáló szociológus-politológusok mellett ezek lélektani vonulatait is elemezhetnék a politikai pszichológia módszereivel. A szerzők ismertetik a politikai pszichológia történetét, a tudományok közötti elhelyezkedését, azokat a lényegi kapcsolódási pontokat, amelyekkel ez a hazánkban most felfedezésre váró tudomány más társadalomtudományokhoz illeszkedik. Módszertanában a pszichobiográfiai elemzések, a kérdőíves lekérdezések, az interjúk és egyéb felszólalások kognitív térképezése az orvostudomány pszichiátriai eszköztárával azonos. A csoportdinamikai jellemzők, a választói attitűd, a vezetők személyisége és a különböző politikai helyzetekben mutatott magatartási mintái, a tekintélyelvűség, játék-játszma, karizma mind olyan esszenciája a politikai pszichológiának, amely inkább a pszichológiai-pszichiátriai folyamatokat boncolgatja és a kognitív-viselkedéstudományi ismeretek felhasználásával az orvostudományt is érinti. Jelen tanulmány a politikai pszichológiát mutatja be, amely bár alapvetően a társadalomtudományokon belül helyezkedik el, mégis mint interdiszciplináris tudományág a pszichológiai-pszichiátriai vonulatain keresztül több szállal kötődik az orvostudományhoz.
