Abstract  

Isomer yield ratio measurements in fission are important in understanding the fission process. With the development of new instrumental techniques, a large number of yield data are now available. The experimental data on isomer yield ratios in the thermal neutron induced fission of235U are compared with those calculated from the simple statistical model byMadland andEngland. The method of calculation has been extended to the isotopes having more than one isomeric state. The results may be explained according to the multi-exit-channel model of fission.

This study applies Taylor's (2000) proposed fiscal rule to EU-15 countries. We show that such a simple, flexible and transparent fiscal rule, if applied to individual EMU countries, could improve the enforceability of the Stability and Growth Pact. This rule is used to compute the structural budget balance consistent with a total budget position in balance, given national specificities concerning automatic stabilisers and the output gap. It is thus designed for being consistent with both fiscal discipline and flexibility.

Abstract  

After 36 years of operation, reactor Thetis at the Institute for Nuclear Sciences (Ghent University) was decommissioned in December 2003. On this occasion, a survey is presented of the characteristics and features of Thetis, which were opening the way to its significant contribution to NAA and its leading role in the development of the k 0-standardization. A summary is given, including a few specific examples, of fundamental analytical developments and practical applications based on irradiations in the reactor Thetis.

It is well demonstrated that wheat-rye 1BL/1RS translocated chromosome leads to some valuable novel traits such as disease resistance, high yield and functional stay-green after anthesis. To understand the physiological mechanism of 1BL/1RS translocation responsible for osmotic stress, two wheat cultivars, CN12 and CN17, carrying the translocated chromosome and MY11 without the translocated chromosome were employed in the study. During 5-day osmotic stress, fresh weight inhibition, chlorophyll content, soluble protein content, MDA concentration, antioxidant enzymes activity and free polyamines content were examined. CN12 and CN17, especially cultivar CN17, registered greater biomass and minor oxidative damage compared with their wheat parent. Meanwhile, the concentration of Spd and Spm in CN17 was significantly higher than the others. In addition, we found a positive correlation of fresh weight inhibition (FWI) and Put concentration, and a negative one with the parameters (Spd + Spm): Put ratio, indicating the importance of higher polyamine (Spd and Spm) accumulation on the adaptation to osmotic stress. Therefore, we proposed that the accumulation of higher polyamines (Spd and Spm) should play an important role on the adaptation of 1BL/1RS translocation lines to osmotic stress and might be important factors for the origin of novel traits introduced by 1BL/1RS.

Lacosamide, a new type of antiepileptic drug, was subjected to forced degradation under the conditions of hydrolysis (acidic and alkaline), oxidation, dry heat, and photolysis to characterize its possible degradation products. The drug showed significant degradation under acidic, alkaline and oxidative conditions. The degradation products were separated on an Agilent Zorbax SB-C18 column with gradient elution using a mobile phase consisting of acetonitrile and ammonium acetate (0.002 mol/L) with formic acid as additive. A combination of liquid chromatography hybrid triple quadrupole-linear ion trap mass spectrometry (LC–QqLIT-MS) and liquid chromatography hybrid ion trap/time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-IT/TOF-MS) was used to identify degradation products. A total of 7 products including 4 novel degradation products were characterized. The mechanisms of degradation products of lacosamide were discussed. Application of the method to study degradation products of lacosamide provided fragment information, allowing further investigation of the degradation pathways and intrinsic stability of the drug.
