Insertion of lattice-valued functions in a monotone manner is investigated. For L a ⊲-separable completely distributive lattice (i.e. L admits a countable base which is free of supercompact elements), a monotone version of the Katětov-Tong insertion theorem
for L-valued functions is established. We also provide a monotone lattice-valued version of Urysohn’s lemma. Both results yield
new characterizations of monotonically normal spaces. Moreover, extension of lattice-valued functions under additional assumptions
is shown to characterize also monotone normality.
We investigate the relations between decreasing sequences of sets and the insertion of semi-continuous functions, and give
some characterizations of countably metacompact spaces, countably paracompact spaces, monotonically countably paracompact
spaces (MCP), monotonically countably metacompact spaces (MCM), perfectly normal spaces and stratifiable spaces.

During our recent four years epidemiological studies ofMaize dwarf mosaic virus (MDMV) populations in Hungary, when 86 virus isolates were collected and analysed, a unique nucleic acid sequence variant was found in the 3’end region of the viral genome. According to our sequence studies, which also included all available MDMV sequences from different databanks, the coat protein region of the viral genome prooved to be quite identical. However, in several cases an insertion was located in the same position of the coat protein region. In the unique sequence variant we also found a 27 nt deletion in addition to the insertion. According to the extensive sequence search this deletion is unique and have been located only in two other potyvirus coat protein regions, while never in the case of MDMV. The potential role of this deletion in the virus infectivity, replication or other biological characteristics is discussed.

In Ms 29 of the National and University Library in Ljubljana (Slovenia) — an early 13th-century copy of Dialogorum libri IV by Gregory the Great — there are two musical insertions: the sequence Celi solem imitantes and the hymn Jam lucis orto sidere. Written in Hungarian notation they were inserted onto blank pages in the completed manuscript in the span of time from the late 13th to the mid-14th century. Ms 29 bears a marginal inscription referring to Augustinus Cazottus (Kažotić), Bishop of Zagreb in the early 14th century. It was obviously in his possession. Presumably, the sequence and the hymn were inserted into Ms 29 somewhere in the Diocese of Zagreb, by someone skilled in Hungarian notation.

Otitis media with effusion is the most common cause of conductive hearing loss in the pediatric population. Insertion of ventilation tubes with or without adenoidectomy is the accepted and standard surgical procedure. CO2 laser myringotomy without tube placement has been advocated as an alternative treatment.
To compare long-term follow-up results of laser versus classical myringotomy with ventilation tube insertion over five years.
Materials and Methods
86 patients with bilateral otitis media with effusion were divided into two groups: laser myringotomy group and myringotomy with ventilation tube insertion group, with follow-up in hearing results and recurrence rates over five years.
The mean patency time of myringotomy in laser group was 23 days, while the mean patency time of the ventilation tubes ears was 4.0 months in myringotomy group. Twelve patients in laser group (13.9%) showed a recurrent otitis media with effusion compared to 9 patients in myringotomy group (10.4%).
Laser fenestration is a less effective alternative to myringotomy and tube placement. The recurrence rates after both procedures did not show statistical significance over long follow-up. It might be considered as an effective alternative to classical surgery and ideal for short-term ventilation.
A sufficient condition for the strict insertion of a continuous function between two comparable upper and lower semicontinuous
functions on a normal space is given. Among immediate corollaries are the classical insertion theorems of Michael and Dowker.
Our insertion lemma also provides purely topological proofs of some standard results on closed subsets of normal spaces which
normally depend upon uniform convergence of series of continuous functions. We also establish a Tietze-type extension theorem
characterizing closed Gδ-sets in a normal space.
Samples of the composition of 10Fe2O3·10CaO·80SiO2 were prepared by the sol-gel method and heat-treated in different atmospheres. They were investigated by X-ray diffraction,
scanning electron microscopy and Mössbauer spectroscopy. In the heat-treated samples in air iron is present up to 1000 °C
in form of hematite and as Fe3+ in the tetrahedral sites. A wide range of hematite particle sizes was observed, the average size increased with heating temperature.
At 1000 °C wollastonite was observed, at 1200 °C tridymite was formed and all the iron was incorporated in hematite. A heat-treatment
at 500 °C under reducing conditions led to poorly crystallized maghemite and at 700 °C to metallic iron and fayalite formation.
