In our 3-year study ground beetle assemblages were investigated in habitats with different weed coverage and insecticide treatments in an apple orchard in Hungary. The aim of the study was to compare the effects on the activity density and composition of carabid assemblages of two insecticide disturbance levels; 1) applications of selective insecticides (integrated plant protection, IPM - representing lower degree of disturbance); 2) applications of broad-spectrum insecticides (conventional plant protection - representing a higher degree of disturbance). Particular attention was paid to the joint effects of weed patterns in the orchard and insecticide treatments as well as to the carabid assemblages in the two neighbouring semi-natural habitats. The less intense insecticide disturbance significantly increased the activity density and species richness of the apple orchard carabid assemblages. The mosaic habitats of the orchard herb layer, where higher and lower herb coverage alternate, altogether maintained more abundant and diverse carabid assemblages, than the habitat of closed, dense vegetation. The intra-orchard habitats with higher weed coverage enhanced the post-disturbance re-colonisation from the hedges, and therefore resulted carabid assemblages more similar to those of the semi-natural hedge vegetation. However, this re-colonisation was not great enough to compensate for the high mortality of the orchard carabid assemblage, which mostly consisted of species rare in the hedges. The high insecticide disturbance, affected the diversity of carabid assemblages in the intra-orchard habitats of high and low weed coverage differently, probably because of induced inter-habitat movement. Habitat attachment and post-disturbance recovery of Amara aenea, A. bifrons, A. fulva, A. ingenua, Broscus cephalotes, Calathus ambiguus, C. erratus, C. fuscipes, Cicindela hybrida, Harpalus albanicus, H. distinguendus, H. flavescens, H. froelichi, H. hirtipes, H. picipennis, H. rufipes, H. serripes, H. servus and H. tardus are also discussed.
The various feminist projects converge on the idea that language (constructed in its largest sense, as the varied system of discourses through which the world becomes constructed) is the primary cultural agency through which the masculine dominates and represses the feminine. To effect a change at all, it is necessary to undermine language from within, or to mark the ways in which language reveals its own undermining. In much feminist thought, language is understood as a wholly phallogocentric and monolithic domain, which has no place for the ihwomanli who becomes in her difference and otherness the figure for all that remains repressed and silenced. 1 I am analyzing two works by women writers that foreground the issues of marginality and textuality. They belong to different literary traditions: Gertrude Stein's Tender Buttons to the American modernist, and Agáta Gordon's Kecskerúzs to the contemporary Hungarian literary context. The reason I read them together is that they both address the problem of identity as it is constructed by discourse. Also, they are exemplary works of an experimentalist feminine lit- erary discourse that has a long tradition in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. As Friedman and Fuchs summarize:
Searching for adverse drug reactions at the margin of scientific fields
The scientometric detection of peripheral but potentially innovative developments in pharmaceutical research
Abstract
Results are presented of a scientometric analysis focusing on peripheral dynamics in a scientific field. We evaluate different techniques on their appropriateness for detecting relations between aspects that seem to be not of central interest but are important in innovative research. We do so in order to quantify the role that adverse drug reactions can play as trigger points in innovative drug research.
Abstract
The Miocene-Pliocene Rharb Basin has important groundwater and hydrocarbon potential in western Morocco. The Pliocene-Quaternary reservoir rests upon the Miocene-Pliocene marly units. The paleogeographic limits are based on planktonic foraminifera biozones. They contributed to the geometric reconstruction of this basin. The goal of the present study is to establish the paleogeographic evolution of the Rharb Basin and the Hercynian structures deduced from seismic and gravity data interpretation. The Pliocene-Quaternary deposits exhibit thickness and lateral facies variations. The Pliocene bathyal gulf showed several tectonic phases, marked by the westward migration of the paleogeographic limit in its eastern part, and a southward migration from its northern one. During Miocene-Pliocene times, the tectonic activity within the study area is characterized by extensional and compressional structures. The faults affecting the Paleozoic units were reactivated several times. The comparison between the paleogeographic limits and identified Hercynian structures constitutes fresh evidence for reactivation of pre-existing Hercynian faults.
Abstract
Marine sediment cores were taken from Sagami Bay of the western Northwest Pacific and analyzed for 239+240Pu and 137Cs activities. A significant correlation was observed between 239+240Pu and 137Cs activities in sediment cores, i.e., their vertical profiles. The measured activities which were used to obtain the inventories of 239+240Pu and 137Cs in the sediment column, showed large variations, ranging from 36 to 474 MBq/km2 for 239+240Pu and 49 to 652 MBq/km2 for 137Cs. 239+240Pu inventories in the sediment from one region in the Bay, Sagami Nada were 5–10 times greater than those predicted from atmospheric global fallout 42 MBq/km2 at the same latitude. On the other hand, 137Cs inventories, with a mean value of 297±168 MBq/km2, were much less than predicted, 2040 MBq/km2. The activity ratios of 239+240Pu/137Cs obtained, with a mean of 0.65±0.17, were significantly greater than the ratio predicted from fallout, 0.021. Furthermore, there was a clear relationship between both 239+240Pu and 137Cs inventories and the water content, indicating that higher inventories may be attributed principally to concentration in, and scavenging by, fine-grained particles.
