Abstract

With the global expansion of the COVID-19 pandemic, social or physical distancing, quarantines, and lockdowns have become more prevalent. Concurrently, Pornhub, one of the largest pornography sites, has reported increased pornography use in multiple countries, with global traffic increasing over 11% from late February to March 17, 2020. While some substantial increases have coincided with Pornhub making its premium services free to countries in lockdowned or quarantined jurisdictions, countries without such free premium access have also reported increases in the range of 4–24%. In addition, pornography searches using the terms “coronavirus”, “corona”, and “covid” have reached more than 9.1 million. In this letter, we discuss COVID-19-related pornography-use patterns and the impact they may have with respect to problematic pornography use.

Stream of consciousness is the manifestation of verbality in writing. Through the narrative technique of stream of consciousness, the writer has the opportunity to use the a very personal tone. This study examines three short stories by Valery Larbaud, the French writer and translator, which are characterized by this unique symbiosis of verbality and orality. This narrative technique is mainly suitable for the depiction of feelings and thoughts and not the narration of events. Its striking structural feature is the incoherent composition of sentences. Larbaud attributed great significance to narration carried out with the technique of stream of consciousness. The heroes of the three Larbaud short stories, which are in the scope of this study, have emotional problems to solve. The main topic of their ``audible thinking'' is the problem of faithfulness and the spiritual and physical distances between man and woman. Journey through time and space often gives the impression of a film script: the narrator depicts past and imaginary future in incoherent structured sentences which resemble the form of snapshots.

Summary. In the fight against the epidemic, the use of masks has become commonplace, which is a significant challenge in everyday communication situations. This problem has been present in some areas of healthcare in the past, but today’s universal use of masks and personal protective equipment (PPE) is both a symbolic and practical barrier between doctor and patient, making it difficult to establish an effective communication and connectivity on several levels. Therefore, it has become necessary to develop unified communication protocols that help building a relationship of trust in healthcare so that emotional availability of providers and safe physical distance are achieved simultaneously. The aim of our study is to summarize the effects of mask wearing and PPE usage on the physician-patient communication and also the trust and empathy processes that emerge within the relationship through the review of the current literature. We would also like to draw attention to the effects on healthcare staff. Our goal is also to formulate recommendations, taking into account domestic and international experience, that can be used to improve the communication of healthcare professionals, and through that, the satisfaction of the most important actors in care, patients and caregivers.
