The Romanian Seismic Network consisting of 8 short-period stations (S13), 60 Altus — K2 and Q330 seismic stations, is primarily designed to survey the Vrancea seismic region (strong and moderate Vrancea earthquakes). Since July 2002, a new seismic monitoring system, Bucovina Seismic Array (BURAR) has been operating. BURAR consists of 12 seismic stations distributed on a 5 km × 5 km area. 9 stations are equipped with short-period (SP) vertical sensors (GS-21 res) and one station is equipped with broad-band (BB) three component sensor (KS 54000). Broad-band sensors GMG40T (1000V/cm/s) were installed at 5 of the short-period stations, at the beginning of 2008. Recently, NIEP has developed its real-time digital seismic network. This network consists of 21 broad band stations and one seismic array. In the next year NIEP will install additional broad band stations in the central part of Romanian territory and other 40 strong motions stations in Bucharest.At the National Data Centre (NDC) runs BRTT’s Antelope™ 4.9 data acquisition and processing software on two HP workstations for real-time and post processing. The Antelope Real-Time System is also providing automatic event detection, arrival picking, event location and magnitude calculation.The Romanian Seismic Network is already linked with IRIS and ORFEUS organizations and other European countries via Internet and is contributing in near real time with waveform data from 5 broadband stations.The seismotectonic characteristics of the Vrancea region offer the opportunity to create and develop a rapid seismic warning system. This system allows warning in an approximately 25 seconds time window for Bucharest.

Abstract  

The report considers the results of the development of the automated technique for simultaneous, multielement activation analysis of plants and fertilizers for the macronutrient elements N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Cl, and Si. On the basis of analytical procedures, algorithms and software developed, the first automatic (computer based) installation for multielement analyses of plants and fertilizers has been completed and is in routine use in the agrochemical and plant breeding research program at Soviet Union. The proposed technique together with the full automatic real time process of measurement and processing of data by computer, provides a throughput of 250–500 samples (1250–2500 elements determinations) per 8-hour shift, with the accuracy of ±3% for N and ±5–10% for P, K, Mg, Cl and ±15% for Ca.

Abstract  

An On-Line Gamma Monitor profiles the concentration of uranium, plutonium, and americium in waste and product streams of the anion exchange process used to purify plutonium at Los Alamos. The Monitor employs passive gamma Spectrometry to measure the 59.5-KeV and 129-KeV gamma rays of241Am and239Pu, respectively. Because the uranium impurity in typical process streams has no gamma ray suitable for passive measurement, a novel radiotracer technique is used. Uranium-237, always present in plutonium processed at Los Alamos as a minor alpha-decay daughter of241Pu, has a 6.8-day half-life and 208-KeV gamma energy, which make it an ideal radiotracer for macro amounts of uranium in the process. The On-Line Gamma Monitor is used routinely to provide Los Alamos operators with continuous, real-time process control information.

The Moffatt-Swern oxidation (MSO) is a multistep, versatile, metal-free reaction by which alcohols are transformed into aldehydes and ketones. Batch MSO requires low temperatures (−70 °C) due to a highly exothermic reaction step that generates intermediates. This work shows that a rigorous investigation of the MSO in batch can be used as a stepping-stone to its implementation in a continuous-flow reactor (CFR). This work has two parts: the first part details the investigation of MSO in batch; the second covers the translation of the knowledge derived from batch to a CFR. The MSO batch reaction was performed under cryogenic conditions with real-time process monitoring. The reaction was monitored with Raman spectroscopy and could be tracked throughout the reaction. All concentrations were validated using offline high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Two configurations of the CFR were produced. Configuration 1 used the traditional batch methodology in terms of reagent addition and reaction conditions. Configuration 2 used the information derived from the batch reaction, changing the order of the reagent addition and increasing the temperature of the reactor. Real-time quantitative monitoring of chemical yield in the CFR was demonstrated via Raman spectroscopy and partial least squares (PLS) regression modeling. Reaction yield was accurately predicted every 15 s, reducing the need for chromatographic validation once the model was built. Configuration 2 was shown to perform comparably to configuration 1 at low temperature and far outperforming it at higher temperatures. Both CFR configurations performed significantly better than the batch setup in terms of temperature and yield, as was expected.
