Abstract  

Thermal stability and phase structure of thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) based on post-consumer materials such as recycled lowor high-density polyethylene and ground tyre rubber (GTR) were investigated by using TG, DSC and DMTA analysis. Preliminary reclamation of GTR leads to enhancement of compatibility between polyethylene matrix and dispersed GTR particles.

Abstract  

The thermal behavior of chitosan (CS)/natural rubber latex (NRL) blends has been studied by thermogravimetry (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Decomposition behavior of CS changes with the addition of NRL. The effect of blend composition on the amount of residue remaining at various temperatures has been studied. Activation energies of degradation have been calculated using Horowitz-Metzger equation. From the activation energy values, it is found that among the series of the blend compositions, CS15NRL85 exhibits better thermal stability. DSC studies reveals that the CS/NRL blends are thermodynamically incompatible. This is evident from the presence of two glass transitions, corresponding to CS and NRL phases in the blend.

Abstract  

Two series of multiblock copolymers, poly(ester-block-amide)s (PEA) and poly(amide-block-amide)s (PAA), with the same type of oligoamide soft block were obtained. Oligoamide soft block was prepared from dimerized fatty acid and 1,6-hexamethylenediamine. Oligo(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) was used as oligoester hard block in the first series and oligolaurolactam (PA12) was oligoamide hard block in the second one. The thermal and mechanical properties of these copolymers have been investigated as functions of temperature and the hard/soft block ratio. DSC and DMTA revealed that the copolymers behaved as thermoplastic elastomers.

Abstract  

The static loading-induced stress oscillation (SO) in syndiotactic polypropylene (sPP) was studied by modulated differential scanning calorimetry (TMDSC). Samples were taken from the initial necked, premature and mature SO oscillation ranges, respectively, and the related calorimetric responses were compared to those of the bulk material. It was established that necking caused some decrease in the crystallinity. In addition, necking resulted in cold crystallization that was assigned to a polymorphic transition (from all-trans to helical conformation) based on literature results. The TMDSC response was practically the same for necked samples with and without SO. A model was proposed to explain SO. The model assumes the presence of a network (similar to that of semicrystalline thermoplastic elastomers), which is highly stretchable and fails by sudden voiding at the intersections of shear micro bands intermittently.
