Cities are responsible for about 30% of the energy consumed worldwide. Since 2007 more than 50% of the world population lives in cities, and urbanization is still growing. The energy-efficiency of cities is gaining greater importance today. The paper examines the possibilities of energy consumption reduction and optimization in cities. Various urban and architectural tools are described below that affect indirectly and directly the energy balance of cities. The possible ways of using renewable energy sources in cities have been analyzed. Ways and means of their use is analyzed in on-site, nearby and off-site systems.

The aim of this paper is to analyse the influence of the ‘emblematic’ public buildings of the state socialist era2 on the development of urban centres through examples of Hungarian rural towns. As these buildings of special importance were built typically in central areas, their relationship with the already existing historic centres is an important question. This paper aims to focus on three important contextual layers which represent significant dimensions of the urban structure (urban corpus context, urban fabric context, urban design context). This multi-layer context analysis can be considered as a new and efficient method. It can be adapted very well to analyse environmental relationships of various developments, such as housing estates or city centres.

Abstract

Public space is the most important place for social life, but it is also part of the identity of the local community. This is particularly true in Komló, where the mining past is still a perceptible and integral part of local identity. Petőfi Square is the central square of Komló's Kökönyös district, an urban district center that preserves the memories of its past, but has not evolved with changing needs in the city for some time. The renewal of Petőfi Square and its surroundings was an environmental architecture task that built on local values, responded to the needs of local people and helped the development of community life, and had to cope with a number of parallel demands.

A 19. századtól ismét erőd jellege válik a meghatározóvá, a Duna-part stratégiai hídfőit elfoglalják a katonai létesítmények. Csupán a 20. század első évtizedeiben kerül sor a déli és az északi part egybekapcsolására, ami nemcsak a hidat jelenti, hanem az északi hídfő körül akkoriban kiépülő reprezentatív teresedést és parkot is. A két világháború között a frissen egyesített várost határ szeli ketté. A közös városi zónát, így mindenekelőtt a hídfők környékét, illetve általában a Duna-partokat elfoglalják az ipari létesítmények. A két város közé ékelődő ipari zóna azóta is meghatározó szerkezeti eleme a városnak.

Linear sight analysis is a relatively new method to represent and evaluate interior townscapes along a route. It has been conducted recently by video techniques, but a concise theory and adequate methodology is lacking to cover the complexity of the built environment including people living in it, the natural and cultural background, the spirit of the place and the role of the observer being part of the scene. This research reviews the perspectives of the new concept of urban landscape and recent theoretical approaches including the new science called Promenadology or Strollology that the German call Spaziergangswissenschaft. This paper attempts to demonstrate some research directions and theoretical frameworks as integral parts of the new research field, whilst also indicating its practical outcomes.
