Tanulmányunk a bosszúviselkedés személyi, kapcsolati és szituatív meghatározóit elemzi, áttekintve a vonatkozó, legfőképpen személyiséglélektani és szociálpszichológiai irodalmat. Áttekintésünkben nemcsak azokra a tanulmányokra támaszkodunk, melyek a bosszúállás jelenségét tekintik tárgyuknak, de azokra is, amelyek a megbocsátásét. Tesszük ezt azért, mert a két jelenség igen erősen összekapcsolódik, annak ellenére, hogy nem egymás ellentétei. A bosszúvágy és bosszúállás multifaktoriális természetének bemutatása mellett különös hangsúlyt kap e viselkedés folyamatjellegének és a lelki egészségre gyakorolt hatásainak bemutatása. Az idői lefutás elemzésekor, és a lelki egészségre gyakorolt hatás leírásában is kitüntetett figyelmet szentelünk a bosszúálló viselkedéshez kapcsolódó rágódásnak, a ruminációnak. Kifejtésre kerül, miért is olyan fontos a segítő, illetve terápiás kapcsolatokban a bosszúviselkedés természetének  megismerése.
