Abstract
This article presents a rare case of intra-articular chondroma of the wrist joint diagnosed with the help of MR arthrography.
Case report
Cases of intra-articular chondromas are scarce in literature [1, 2]. We present a rare case of an intra-articular chondroma of the left wrist joint with the role of MR arthrography.
A 27-year male patient presented, with a complaint of a hard mass around the right wrist since 2 months. X-ray of the wrist showed a well defined soft tissue lesion with calcified matrix located anterior to distal end of radius (Fig. 1A and B). Computed Tomography (CT scan), confirmed the presence of calcified matrix with stippled calcification in the lesion (Fig. 1C). On Magnetic resonance Imaging (MRI), there were multiple T1/T2 hypointense foci (Fig. 1D). MR arthrography showed intra-articular contrast surrounding the mass suggestive of intraarticular communication with the radiocarpal joint (Fig. 1E and F). Based on these imaging findings, a diagnosis of Intra-articular Chondroma of the wrist was made. Complete resection of the lesion was done and histopathology (Fig. 2) confirmed the diagnosis.
Radiograph of wrist PA view (A) and lateral view (B) shows a well defined soft tissue lesion with calcified matrix anterior to distal end of radius (blue arrow). Computed tomography axial images (C) shows the calcified matrix of the lesion. Magnetic resonance images (MRI) T2 weighted images of wrist in coronal (D) shows a well defined predominately hyperintense mass with multiple hypointense foci lying anterior to distal part of radius on palmar aspect of wrist (blue arrow). Magnetic resonance images (MRI) T1 weighted images of wrist following intraarticular contrast injection in coronal (E) and axial planes (F) show intra-articular contrast surrounding the mass suggestive of intraarticular communication with the wrist joint (blue arrows)
