In 1926, Austria and Hungary entered into an archives treaty in Baden. This treaty did not share the archival heritage of the Habsburg Monarchy (after 1867, the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy), but rather left it in Vienna and declared it the joint intellectual property of the two states. The Hungarian state has consistently demonstrated its commitment to the processing of Viennese sources, as evidenced by the establishment of scholarships through the Collegium Hungaricum (1924) and the Hungarian Historical Institute in Vienna (1920). This paper will present an analysis of the relationship between the Collegium Hungaricum and the central archives in Vienna from the founding of the institute (1924) to the present day. It will demonstrate how Hungarian archivists delegated to the Austrian capital have played a crucial role in this relationship.
