Az endoszkópos vizsgálatok során gyakran alkalmaznak nyugtató és fájdalomcsillapító hatású gyógyszereket. A szedáció növeli a betegek együttműködését, segítve ezzel a vizsgálatok elvégzését és biztonságos befejezését, hátránya azonban, hogy növeli a vizsgálatok időtartamát, költségét, illetve szövődményeket okozhat. Szedatív gyógyszeres előkészítés alkalmazására felső panendoszkópia, kolonoszkópia és endoszkópos retrográd cholangiopancreatographia során egyaránt sor kerülhet. A szedáció egyes formái, a használt gyógyszerek mellett az összefoglalás áttekinti az endoszkópos gyógyszeres előkészítés során alkalmazható újabb módszereket, valamint bemutatja a hazánkban elterjedt gyakorlatot.
