Mind a depresszió, mind a diabetes mellitus napjaink és várhatóan jövőnk népbetegségei. Mára kellő mennyiségű, nagy betegszámú vizsgálat bizonyította, hogy cukorbetegekben az átlagpopulációhoz képest gyakrabban jelentkezik depresszió. A két betegség együttes fennállása fokozott veszélyt jelent a betegek számára, hiszen a komorbiditás kedvezőtlenül befolyásolja a diabetes kezelhetőségét, és ezáltal felgyorsítja a diabeteses szövődmények kialakulását, amelyek megjelenése a depresszív tünetek súlyosbításával egy ördögi kört indíthatnak be. A szerzők részletesen foglalkoznak a diabetes és a depresszió komplex kétirányú kapcsolatának elméleti és gyakorlati hátterével. Céljuk az, hogy felhívják arra a figyelmet, hogy a szénhidrát-anyagcsere rendezésének gátja lehet a depresszió, amelyet fel kell ismerni és szükség szerint kezelni kell, hogy javuljon cukorbetegeink életminősége.
