A fittség (aerob kapacitás, maximális munkavégző képesség, maximális állóképességi teljesítmény vagy az ezekkel szorosan korreláló fizikai teljesítmény vagy terhelés-élettani mutató) mértéke, illetve a fittséget javító fizikai aktivitás (munka, szabadidős aktivitás, közlekedés, házimunka) mennyisége (heti kalóriaekvivalensben) szoros, fordított korrelációt mutat az összhalálozással és a cardiovascularis halálozással. A leginkább fitt felső harmad élet- és egészségkilátásai 30–40%-kal kedvezőbbek a legkevésbé fitt harmaddal, negyeddel szemben. Aki fittebbé válik az élete bármely szakaszában, jelentősen nagyobb eséllyel válik védettebbé a coronariabetegséggel, a szívelégtelenséggel, a gutaütéssel szemben.
