A gyulladásos bélbetegség fiatal, termékeny korban lévő felnőtteket érintő megbetegedés, amelynek népesedési következményei sem elhanyagolhatóak. Míg a termékenység (férfiak szulfaszalazinkezelésétől, illetve ileum-poch analis anastomosison átesett nőktől eltekintve) nem különbözik jelentősen az átlaglakosságétól, az „önkéntes gyermektelenség” előfordulása nagyobb, 14–18%. A betegek megfelelő felvilágosítása a terhesség kimeneteléről, a gyógyszerelés lehetőségeiről, azoknak nem kívánt hatásairól, a család bevonása a döntéshozatalba kiemelt jelentőségű, amellyel a gyulladásos bélbetegségben szenvedők és családjuk „önkéntes gyermektelenségének” aránya csökkenthető, a gyógyszerszedés elfogadása javítható. A szerzők összefoglalják a gyulladásos bélbetegségnek a termékenységet, a terhesség kimenetelét befolyásoló hatását, a gyógyszerelés lehetőségeit a fogantatás előtt, a terhesség, illetve a szoptatás alatt.
