Az emberi adenovírusok modellként szolgálnak genetikai kutatásokban és génterápiában. Az általuk immunkompetens egyénekben okozott légúti, gyomor-bél rendszeri és szemfertőzések többnyire szövődménymentes lefolyásúak. Lappangó állapotukból azonban reaktiválódhatnak és akár halálos opportunista fertőzéseket okozhatnak immunszuppresszált egyénekben. Az immunszuppresszió okától függően különféle szerotípusú adenovírusok egyedül vagy kombinációkban eltérő szerveket betegíthetnek meg. Súlyos kombinált immundeficientiában szenvedő gyermekekben tüdő- és májgyulladást, vérzéses hólyaghurutot okozhatnak az A- és C-species szerotípusai. A szerzett immunhiányos állapotok közül gyermekkori haemapoeticus őssejt átültetését követő légúti, bélrendszeri és húgyúti gyulladásokban a 31-es típus gyakori. Szervátültetést követően a B-species szerotípusai okozhatják az átültetett szerv pusztulását. AIDS során az F-speciesbe sorolt új szerotípusok, valamint a D-species tagjai okoznak bélgyulladást, a B-species rekombináns szerotípusai pedig húgyúti fertőzéseket. Lymphomák, daganatok, szisztémás lupus erythematosus rosszabbodását adenovírusok okozta immunszuppresszió elősegítheti. Az opportunista adenovírusok diagnosztikájában a szerológiai eljárások nem megbízhatóak, a vírus-DNS, illetve a kópiaszám nyomon követése célszerű. Kezelésre cidofovirszármazékok, ribavirin, ganciclovir, vidarabin, mikro-RNS alkalmas. Orv. Hetil., 2012, 153, 1896–1904.
