A szabad oxigéngyökök, a szuperoxid anion, hidrogén-peroxid és a hidroxilgyökök toxikus hatásukkal károsítják a sejtmembránt. A szelén esszenciális nyomelem, amely komplex effektusát szabadgyök-fogó hatása révén fejti ki az endokrin rendszerben. Ebben a mechanizmusban a szelént tartalmazó enzimek: dejodinázok, glutation-peroxidázok és tioredoxinok antioxidáns és pajzsmirigyhormonokat reguláló tulajdonsága játszik szerepet. A szelénkezelés kedvező hatásáról számoltak be Hashimoto-thyreoiditisben és Basedow–Graves-kórban, és az utóbbi időben endokrin orbitopathiában is eredményesnek bizonyult. A gyógyszer szerepe diabetes mellitusban még vitatott, mivel egyesek inzulinszerű hatást figyeltek meg, mások a betegség kialakulásának növekvő kockázatáról számoltak be. Mind a női, mind a férfi autoimmun eredetű meddőségben kedvező eredményt tapasztaltak szelénkezelés után. Orv. Hetil., 2013, 154, 1628–1635.
