A D-vitamin csontanyagcserén túlmutató hatása a tudományos figyelem középpontjába került az utóbbi években. A cukorbetegséggel és annak szövődményeivel kapcsolatos vizsgálatok pedig kiemelt népegészségügyi jelentőséggel bírnak. Egyre több adat támasztja alá a D-vitamin-hiány és a cukorbetegség kapcsolatát, a diabeteses neuropathia és a D-vitamin kapcsolatáról azonban eddig kevés és ellentmondó adat áll rendelkezésre. A többségében 2-es típusú cukorbetegek körében végzett vizsgálatok alátámasztják a D-vitamin-hiány és a neuropathia előfordulása, illetve a neuropathia okozta tünetek súlyossága közötti kapcsolatot. A legújabb tanulmányok a talpi fekélyek kialakulásában is felvetik a D-vitamin-hiány kóroki szerepét. Orv. Hetil., 2013, 154(51), 2012–2015.
