Az akut mesenterialis ischaemia azonnali beavatkozást igénylő sürgősségi állapot. A sebészet és intenzív terápia területén az utóbbi években bekövetkezett komoly fejlődés ellenére a kórkép halálozása továbbra is kiemelkedően magas. A klinikai kép sokszínűsége és a nem specifikus laboratóriumi eltérések gyakran késleltetik a diagnózist, ami az ischaemiás károsodás progresszióját és a beteg túlélési esélyeinek csökkenését vonja maga után. Mindezek miatt egyre nagyobb az igény olyan, a mesenterialis ischaemiát korán és megbízhatóan jelző szerológiai markerre, amely képes lerövidíteni a diagnosztikus folyamatot.
