Nowadays, the most frequently performed surgical procedure in the world is cataract surgery. Thanks to the precise intraocular lens power calculation and the sophisticated phacoemulsification technique, the results of cataract surgery are excellent. A mandatory step in international and domestic professional guidelines is the injection of 0.1 ml of 1% cefuroxime, an antibiotic used to prevent endophthalmitis, into the anterior chamber at the end of the surgery. A drug administered in larger quantities than prescribed or improperly diluted can cause serious permanent complications in both the anterior chamber of the eye and the fundus. With the prescribed dosage, little-known lesions may rarely occur, but they respond well to local therapy. In our article, we aim to provide a literature review on intracameral cefuroxime and its potential toxicity in relation to a case. Orv Hetil. 2025; 166(8): 301–306.
Napjainkban a legnagyobb számban végzett műtéti beavatkozás a világon a szürkehályog-műtét. A pontos műlencsetervezésnek és a kifinomult phacoemulsificatiós technikának köszönhetően a cataractaműtét eredményei kiválóak. Nemzetközi és hazai szakmai irányelvben rögzített kötelező lépés a műtét végén elülső csarnokba injektálandó antibiotikum, az endophthalmitis megelőzésére használt 0,1 ml 1%-os cefuroxim. Az előírtnál nagyobb mennyiségben beadott vagy rosszul hígított gyógyszer mind a szem elülső csarnokában, mind a szemfenéken súlyos, maradandó szövődményeket okozhat. Az előírt adagolás mellett ritkán előfordulhatnak kevéssé ismert elváltozások, melyek azonban helyi terápiára jól reagálnak. Közleményünkben irodalmi összefoglalót kívánunk adni az intracameralis cefuroximról, annak potenciális toxicitásáról egy saját eset ismertetése kapcsán. Orv Hetil. 2025; 166(8): 301–306.
